These original Gilbert Kong cuts sound fantastic! Morgen sounds as if he is singing in my living room, the drums are crisp and the searing fuzz drenched guitar lines are sublime. Welcome to the void’s proto punk, of dreams breezy fuzzy acid psych ballad, eternity in between’s wicked early who like psych rock right from the who sell out playbook. Love it and that is only side 1. Side 2 starts out just as promising with Purple’s heavy meditation acid psych thanks to the smooth dreamy vocal lines, propulsive drums and searing fuzz lead.
This one deserves to be in your collection price be damned -

This 80s reissue sounds better than any modern reissue I've heard. Radioactive's bootleg (the remaster of which Sunbeam used) was dubbed from vinyl. I was told when I purchased this that it was from the original master tapes - I can't tell if it's true or if this was dubbed from vinyl, but it sounds marvelous regardless. Definitely recommend picking up if you find a cheap copy! My only complaints are the packaging isn't as nice as the newer reissues and it doesn't come in a gatefold. -
While what I've read indicates that Sunbeam Records do a lot of unauthorised reissues, I'm fairly certain this was ok'd by Steve Morgen so is at least semi-official

Though I didn't listen to an original copy :(, compared to other reissues the quality of the pressing is very good!

Edited one year agoI've been searching and waiting for a decent pressing of this album for a while, I've been really patient too. ☺️
Firstly the gatefold is quality, the booklet and poster are nice extras well done.
The quality of the vinyl is fantastic, quiet.
Now I haven't heard an original pressing so I don't know if a few of the things I'm hearing are baked into the recording but I think that may be the case due to the rest of the album sounding as I expect an album like this to sound which is surprisingly good.
Side 1
Has some random low frequency thuds on 1 track that seemed to excite my sub a few times, I don't know if it's in the recording, it kind of sounds like plosives or someone bumping a microphone, it happens maybe 3 times and isn't terribly distracting but worth mentioning.
The other is something that sounds like inner groove distortion on track 4 (I think) but it might just be distortion baked into the recording as I said.
Side 2
Sounds great, nice balance, as good as this recording can probably can get.
Overall I'm completely stoked to finally get a nice copy if not the nicest copy of this Grail of a monster psych record.
Highly recommend this version 👌 -

The self-titled album from the rock band Steve Morgen on original pressings -- is, without a doubt, one of the heaviest, wildest, most fuzzed-out acid-psych artifacts from the 1960s. Apart from perhaps the last track, every song is a stone-cold killer. The opening track, "Welcome To The Void," might be the most proto-punk thing to escape from the decade, with references to classic children's literature howled in dark poetic form. The thundering drums of Bob Maiman strike the eardrums like a taser, and Steve's screaming guitar rips open a time portal inside your brain. "Of Dreams" features uniquely edited vocals, perhaps sped up slightly from when they were recorded, which sounds angelic and frightening at the same time. One of the best tracks is "She's The Nitetime," whose opening 10 seconds of distortion and drum blasts is some of the most powerful in rock-and-roll history. If you like psychedelic music, or heavy rock music of any type, you absolutely need this.
The original pressings were mastered extraordinarily loud -- completely in tune with the style of the music -- and as such are non-audiophile pressings. Nonetheless, no CD reissue has ever done this album justice, though the 1992 French CD (from vinyl) is closest. The Guerssen, which compares very favorably to the original pressings... in fact, it may be even better. -
Amazing remaster loved the sweet times of acid they had ....even sometimes that guitar is crispy or some noise from the old recorder....gives me chills ....thanx guerssen ...10/10

I am fortunate to have an original that plays great, but wanted to pick this up so that I didn’t have to break out the OG every time I wanted to play the album on wax. The short of it: this is overpriced and doesn’t sound great.
Gatefold jacket with Obi is pretty good quality, but not as thick and sturdy as jackets from Analogue Productions or MoFi.
The inner sleeves are plain paper. I don’t think there’s any excuse to not include poly sleeves of some kind with a release in this price range. Unacceptable.
The included booklet is nice. Nothing too fancy, but decent enough.
The records themselves had a fair amount of paper dust and small bits, but no fingerprints or scratches/scuffs. Not too bad there. Sadly, the first record (original album) has one of the worst warps I’ve ever encountered. The second record (alternate takes and mixes) was warped, but not nearly as bad.
As for the sound…it’s not good. It sounds like the EQ was futzed with and it’s got a bit of distortion/shrillness to the high frequencies. This album is a fuzzed out psychedelic trip, so even the original isn’t what one would call an audiophile experience, but the original sounds noticeably better than this reissue. Drums are more realistic, highs aren’t shrill, and it’s just a more pleasant listen overall.
For $52.99 before taxes, the overall quality of this release is nowhere close to what you get at that price from other labels.
I haven’t listened to the bonus stuff yet, but others have said the material is worth having if you’re a fan, and that they sound better than the original album. I hope so.
Color me disappointed.

The French reissue version on GMG sounds very good; surprised when I heard this.
