Guidance: (last updated: 15.11.2024)
To search for a string in the runout list: Press CTRL and F and then enter the search string.
1) The full runout information is entered into one 'Matrix / Runout' field per side, not in several fields (see RSG §5.2.c).
2) Do not split the runout strings into stamped and etched parts - they have to be in one field for each side.
3) Do not distinguish etched or stamped parts in the runouts by parentheses or brackets, e.g. [ABC]
4) Do not add descriptions into the Matrix/Runout fields, e.g. {stamped} / [etched] / (turned 90° sideways) / (mirrored), etc..
5) BAOI descriptions:
a) Despite being allowed by the RSG, please avoid entering into the Matrix/Runout Description field:
- "etched", "stamped", "etched/stamped", or similar (unless the information is essential identification criteria, e.g. a stamped matrix indicates a later pressing, an etched matrix an earlier pressing; plant A is identified by an etched H, plant B by a stamped H)
- the appearance of a matrix element, e.g. upside down, mirrored, turned 90° sideways;
- the position of a matrix element, e.g. 6 o'clock
b) Check the company or engineer profiles for standard runout appearances, e.g. an EMI UK matrix is always stamped so that shouldn't be repeated in the BAOI description.
c) BAOI descriptions should only be edited to correct errors or, potentially, when a new variant is introduced.
d) Existing descriptions should not be moved to the Release Notes, unless a new variant is added and the descriptions are complex (e.g. with etched and stamped parts) and/or too long / illegible / confusing.
e) The very first BAOI variant is standard setter for all following variants: do not add stamped/etched, etc. for your variant, when there is no such description for the preceeding variants.
f) Do not rephrase existing BAOI descriptions, e.g. from "Runout side x" to "Side x runout" or remove "Runout".
6) Capitalization:
a) Capitalize in the Matrix/Runout fields as found in the runouts (e.g. MASTERED BY CAPITOL).
b) Capitalize ANVs and/ or Aliases according to the Guidelines (e.g. Jonz not JONZ, Timtom not TimTom, etc).
c) Use standard English caps in the BAOI descriptions.
7) Do not add adornments to ANVs. Examples: use L. Nix or Max or Paul instead of -L. NIX- or MAX. or PAUL!
8) For combined identifiers with symbols, e.g. ◇F (symbol for the cutting room + letter of the engineer), and where the PAN is known, use an ANV without the symbol. Example: X (16) but not Ian Cooper + ANV X.
9) Locations are not part of the PAN or ANV. Example: For "BA@CR" or "BA-CR", credit "Björn Almstedt" + ANV "BA", and "Cutting Room" with Lacquer Cut At.
10) Cut or lathe or studio numbers are not part of the PAN or ANV. Use e.g. TY instead of TY1 and H instead of H1 as ANVs.
11) Do not use pipes or commas or other separators and only use one space to denote large gaps.
12) To enable a proper search for characters in the matrix strings, use
a) standard letters instead of Unicode (e.g. STERLING instead of sᴛᴇʀʟɪɴɢ, E instead of Ɛ);
b) standard numerals instead of letters, superscript, subscript (e.g. A1 instead of AI / A¹ / A₁ or M1SF1 instead of MISFI);
c) standard uppercase letters instead of roman numerals (e.g. I instead of Ⅰ or ⌶).
13) Symbols or drawn images (e.g. ✩, ⚾︎, or ❀, ♀, Ⓡ, Δ, etc.) are credited as "Lacquer Cut By [Runout Etching <symbol>]" plus the full name of the engineer. Example: runout forum.
14) Symbols, characters, numbers should reflect what they actually mean not how they appear. Examples: the incomplete U for EMI Records (looking like a J), 1 instead of ↾, Schn instead of JLi, A instead of Λ or ∴ .
15) Logos are added as "[Name logo]". Example [SNA logo] (unless they are actual words, e.g. use Bell Sound instead of [Bell Sound logo].
16) Engineers derived from the runouts are with credited Lacquer Cut By or Direct Metal Mastering By (for DMM).
17) Studios derived from the runouts are credited Lacquer Cut At, except for DMM or where explicitly credited, e.g. "Mastered At Trutone".
18) Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) is credited "Direct Metal Mastering By" and "Mastered At".
19) Half-speed mastering is credited as Lacquer Cut By and Mastered By [Half-speed Mastering].
20) Platers / metalworkers are credited with Plated By.
21) Plating / galvanization / metalwork companies are credited with Mastered At. Do not create/use a PAN for companies for the sake of Plated By.
22) When unsure about a role, use Mastered By / At.
23) Mastering credits on the cover and scribes in the runouts are both credited. Example:
Mastered By Bernie Grundman (cover) and BG in the runouts = Mastered By - Bernie Grundman, and Lacquer Cut By - Bernie Grundman + ANV BG.
24) Struck out, crossed out, X'd out text in the BAOI field is always represented as S̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶t̶h̶r̶o̶u̶g̶h̶ (long strikethrough). Do not use █ or ░ or i̸n̸v̸a̸l̸i̸d̸ or [Struck Out], etc. Also see RSG §1.9.4.
Tool: https://manytools.org/facebook-twitter/strikethrough-text/
25) Laser-etched matrices and logos (e.g. MPO) count as etched.
26) "Lacquer Cut At" and "Lacquer Cut By" should not be added in case of one-man studio operations without prior decision. Example: 'BP' indicates Bud Pressner, the engineer, but not his studio; PF indicates Tonstudio Pfanz but not the engineer.
27) In case of two possible ANVs, i.e. one per side, use both (e.g. S.A. for side A and Steve for side B).
28) Engineer initials in the runouts are always capitalized for the ANV, e.g., p.a. = P.A. or csz = CSZ - unless the second letter is part of the first or last name, e.g. KR = Krafft = ANV Kr.
29) Engineer abbreviations in the runouts are normally capitalized for the ANV, e.g. DCHARLES = DCharles.
30) Undefined initials found in runouts should not be generated as a new PAN because their meaning can be ambiguous.
Please report them at the Runout Discussion Forum to have them listed as Unknown.
31) Different engineers, studios, pressing plants in the runouts mean different subs. Also, the absence of them.
Example: release A has TY on both sides but release B has TY only on side A or B.
32) When in doubt, follow the Guidelines.
How to read the format:
XXXXX: Identified part as it appears in the runout area
S, H or HS? Stamped, Hand-etched or Hand-etched Script
Add a company: Lacquer Cut At / Mastered At / Pressed By / Manufactured By a company.
Add a credit: Lacquer Cut By / Plated By / Mastered By an engineer.
Location Link: Existing company website. Not needed on the submission - just a point of reference.
Example: A linked example.
