Edited 11 months agoOh to have a time machine and go back and see this amazing band live. With or without John they were light years ahead of almost everyone. If only people could have understood that better than.
Stuff like these tapes just prove over and over again how amazing they were!
So the sound isn’t perfect, who cares it doesn’t need to be! The music is!! -
Edited 2 years agoThe Quine Tapes is essential for many reasons, not least of which because it contains what I believe to be the longest version of New Age available. The outro so simple, so perfect. D, G, A; G, D, A and set up perfectly by the verse, chorus, bridge.
"Something's got a hold on me and I don't know what...
IT'S THE BEGINNING OF A NEW AGE".
BAM. Complete perfection. Ovah and ovah. Play it for 20 minutes or 20 years. I'd stand there for the whole thing if I could. A route to Divinity no doubt.
Lengths of extant versions of New Age...
Loaded - 4:40
Peel Slowly And See - 5:11
Live At Max's - 5:58
The Complete Matrix Tapes - 6:11
1969 Volume 1 - 6:40
Bootleg Series: The Quine Tapes - 11:21
Maybe someone can add a longer version from a real bootleg? -
As bootlegs go this is pretty good; Robert Quine did a decent job with his little Sony recorder, and it is undoubtedly light years ahead of some of the other sorry offerings out there with the Velvets' name on. I won't name and shame, but suffice it to say that if you want to actually enjoy listening to the Velvets live, then buy this, Live 1969 and The Complete Matrix Tapes. The others really aren't worth your time.
-
I guess this is the way rock and roll has to sound. Another question is ...is this music made for masses ?
The sound is raw and sometimes polished but off course it is a BOOTLEG series.
Sometimes i wish there was a timemachine for seeing and feeling this music. And yes there is NO John Cale here but that is not that important to enjoy these legendary gigs. Listen to this and start a band !!!
Very important and legendary.
