Hi I have a pressing I have never seen,on the actual label on side a there is a red stamp of a 5 sided star is this a promo stamp or rarity any help much appreciated it has the textured sleeve

I love this album, but this particular pressing is rather disappointing. I guess it's good on clarity, but at the expense of bass, so that it sounds thin and unpleasant. On top of this, the music volume is rather low and the surface quite noisy. To be fair, I seem to from my youth that the versions I listened to back then weren't great either. The length of the album maybe didn't help. In any case I'd recommend looking for better versions elsewhere.

Edited one year agoDefinitely not as impressive as my OG Japanese pressing which is more open and dynamic. The soundstage is pushed back a bit with a muddier and more quiet output.
Although the Japanese pressing is also slightly crackled, this was way worse even with a spin clean treatment. I will chalk it up to the relatively poor quality of my copy.
I also had slight different matrices which I couldn't identify elsewhere:
Cds 4005 a//2 t 1 3 5
L 2 1 1

On this record we have a lively interplay but (to the listener’s dismay) Hackett is the less prominent musician in the recordings, anticipating his soon to be departure from the band, as he was disillusioned with the rejection of his compositions (in favour of Banks’ material) and the band’s choice to introduce instead simpler, shorter songs he considered “underdeveloped harmonically”.
In fact Tony Banks dominates the album, not only as the main writer, but he is literally everywhere playing a very large selection of instruments, at the point to gain an “etc.” in the personnel credits.
Every piece is quite complex and layered but when the musicianship is not that hot the overall sensation from these tracks is a sort of stiffness and icy formality. The lp is easily the most adventurous and sophisticated of the quartet era with an evident stress in trying to revisit or even sur the “Supper’s ready” suite, looking for a melodic epic climax in quite every progressive song in the selection and revitalising the ‘English eccentric’ themes of their past outings.
The band presents here difficult progressive monsters such as the fabulous “Eleventh Earl of Mar” (the track to mention by whom consider this lp one of their best works), the more contemplative “One for the vine” (with very interesting melodic solutions), the fusion tinged “Wot gorilla” and the “All in a mouse’s night” characters play.
Side two could be considered even more interesting thanks to the Hackett penned material, “Blood the rooftops” (the best melody in the record) and the two “Unquiet slumbers” episodes (an inspiring musical research in here). The weakness of “Wind and wuthering” are the unripe ballads (for sure “Your own special way”, unfortunately “Afterglow” too), where is easy sensing that Genesis were walking on uncomfortable shoes (despite the fact that the previous album had plenty of very good catchy melodies experimenting in the ‘song’ format)…but they will learn very soon how to fix even that problem. 4 stars out of 5. -
Does this sound quiet to anyone? Like half regular volume. None of my longer records and genesis records have this except for Wind And Wuthering...

Edited one year agoA technical question.
This is one of those albums which has quite long sides (about 28 and 25 minutes) Yet there seems to be very little loss of volume or quality. How is it with some records (Gerry Rafferty`s City to city?) this is possible yet with others (Neil Young`s Ragged glory for example) there is a very distinct loss in volume?
Some of you seem to know the technical side of record production inside and out.
Thank you for the link Gland-nut.A fascinating read.
Thanks to you as well Ramzy. -
I have 2 CDS 4001 versions. One is an A1/B1. Both have the pink mad hatter. Second one the a side has a misprinted CAS 4001 which is struck through and the correct CDS 4001 A\3 is “written” in the run off. B side is stamped correctly CDS 4001 B\3. Any ideas?

Edited 4 years agoAt 25 minutes per side this is a real marathon.
Naturally the cutting levels are quite low so to crank the volume, hopefully with a pristine copy.
With that set, the sound is relatively well projected, but its obvious to hear that its more cluttered and ill defined, even compared to some earlier Genesis. Vocals I feel suffer especially because lyrics are so unintelligible on the busier tunes. Thankfully they issued this with a lyrics insert. The soundstage is neither wide nor too tall either but the projections are pleasant to the ear and mostly tonally accurate.
My main complaint would be the poor balancing between tracks however. Its really quite jarring when going from Your Own Special Way with the Amp turned up 50% more compared to my average record only for Wot Gorilla? to blast bright and loud cymbals through the speakers. Why its so much hotter than the rest I cant guess, but its a real waste of groove space too.
