Edited one year agoThat the second half of "Lungs" hasn't ever been sampled is beyond me. Timeless manages to combine both aspects of 70s ECM: introspective fusion awash in plate reverb and amped up post-Bitches Brew grooves also awash in plate reverb.
The only thing missing is the late winter Nordic vibe. Something on here *has* been sampled by (coff coff) Kanye West, I believe. -
damn, that kick drum will get you evicted. fun record; mix is hot and heavy. (Pressing is grainy, however.)

Edited 3 years agoI've collected dozens of Abercrombie, Metheny, Burton, Towner, etc. ECM releases since about the early '80s, including most of John Abercrombie's catalog. That said, I always missed finding "Timeless"out in the wild.
Hearing this for the first time, it soars straight to the top. What an adventurous trio of advanced musical geniuses, burning through fusion pieces, and a couple of ballads, perhaps unaware how high they have raised the bar for all others to follow.
Sheer brilliance.

Some "cat" that calls himself Jan Hammer shows us his skills on this one. This was one of my first ECM records and this sealed the deal for me. The first track is breakneck speeds and half way through it breaks down into this gurgling funk groove with Hammer on the Moog (I think). It's nice.
The other tracks are good but the last track is some cosmic bliss. One of my favorite tracks on the label.
