Edited 2 years agoShameless rip off of ion by the flirts. The main beat AND exact synth riff (sped up of course to deny responsibility lol) when he's doing the verses, it's undeniable.

referencing Slice Me Nice '98 (CD, Maxi-Single) 567 779-2
Slice Me Nice '98. Now, Is it one thing that many of the synth-pop/euro-pop artist from the 80's has in common, it is that at the end of the 90's, they released '98 or '99 versions of their 80's hit songs.
Some times, the '98 / '99 versions is a brand new remake of the song. Like:
Fancy's 98 version of "Flames Of Love"
Modern Talking's '98 versions of "Cherri Cherri Lady", "Give Me Peace On Earth" and "Lady Lai"
Bad Boys Blue's '98 versions of "Lovers In the Sand", "A World Without You" and "Comeback and Stay"
But most of the time it's just the original version, lazily sped up a bit and added a new eurodance drum beat and bass line to fit it to the eurodance scene. "Slice Me Nice '98" falls under this "lazy" banner.
Slice Me Nice '98 (Radio / Video Version) - The so called 98 version of "Slice Me Nice" The only thing they have done is to add a new eurodance drum beat to the song and an annoying rapper that shouts throughout the song.
Slice Me Nice '98 (Rap Radio / Video Version) - Same as the "Radio/Video Version) but now the annoying rapper is more prominent as he is rapping in this version . And it's not good. It is very obvious that English is not the rappers main language, which of course is not a problem at all. The problem is that the rapper is pronouncing some of the words "wrong" so that i can be hard to hear what it it he is rapping. Also, this is just my opinion, but it feels like he is mumbling or that he is stumbling in his words when he is rapping. But this can also be because the way he pronounce some of the words.
Slice Me Nice '98 (Extended Fetenhits Mix) - Just an extended version of the "Radio/Video version". It starts with some crowd shouting "Hey" and it ends with it to. A very boring extended version
Slice Me Nice '98 (Extended Party Rap Mix) - Exactly the same as the "Extended Fetenhits Mix" but with the rap verses
Slice Me Nice '98 (Java T.'s "Back To The Future" Mix) - Now this is the main reason to get this single. This is an awesome trance remix of "Slice Me Nice". It starts with just the first part of the main riff from "slice me nice" playing, filtering in and out, and slowly playing more of the main riff. Then Fancy's vocals comes in saying slice me nice, followed by a dreamy pad playing underneath. Creating an dreamy atmosphere. Then when the intro stops after around 1 minute, the beat and bass comes in, playing, building up with more percussion as it goes, before a dreamy trance pluck comes in with the pad underneath and it just trance along. It is an awesome remix
So, overall, I can understand that there is a separate vocal and rap version. But there is no difference between them. Just look at the vocal and rap versions of Modern Talking's singles. Some of the rap versions(might be all of them, don't right now) have a harder hitting beat and different bass line, sometimes they also have a slightly different arrangement. But the biggest wast for me is to have one extended version for the "radio/video version" and one for the "Rap/video version". Why not just make one extended and mix the Radio and the Rap version together, or make two different extended versions. It's just lazy filler.
Also, if I'm not wrong, the "Flames Of Love'98" single came out first, and this single copies the track listing from that single. Two radio version (one vocal and one rap), two extended version (One vocal and one rap) and then a club mix.
So, for me, the only reason to add this single to the collection is because of the "Java T.'s "Back To The Future" Mix". But that is just my opinion of course.

ITT people saying someone ripped off someone else when all along most italo disco is just a reiteration of previous rhythms, melodies and song structures :)
-
It was Bobby Orlando who "shamelessly" ripped off the melody of "Slice me nice" of Fancy in the song Helpless of the Flirts. "Slice me nice" was released earlier and back in the day there was talk on the radio about Fancy sueing Bobby Orlando and radio-DJ's marvelling over the audacity of copying a melody so exactly. By the way I don't hate the music of Bobby Orlando (and his many projects like The Flirts), in fact I have quite a lot of records of him (and his projects)

Yep, and this title is not "ion" but "Helpless (You Took My Love)" released in the same year whose same instrumentals but with a slightly lower tempo with the Flirts can be heard at the end until the fading out, arrangements matching the chorus in Fancy's. This said, it'd be interesting to know the precise moment of this year for both releases to figure out who exactly copied who.

Although one might think, isn't this a remake of The Flirts' ION?, it's a true dance classic of its own!
