Notes
The second and final album by Joy Division, released on July 18, 1980 on Factory, two months after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis.
The album was recorded from 18 to 30 March 1980 at Britannia Row Studios, Islington, London.
The LP features a photograph taken by Bernard Pierre Wolff (1978) which was captured at the Staglieno Cemetery located in Genova, Italy. It is a large emotional work created & sculpted by Demetrio Paernio in 1910 for the Appiani family tomb.
The 1980 and 1981 UK pressings have A1 / B-1 matrices with ‘OLD BLUE?’ inscribed on side A.
They come in two different vinyl variants:
– opaque black
– translucent dark red or dark green
This can only be differentiated when held against a strong light source. The translucency was a hallmark of Tranco / PRT.
Additionally, they are differentiated by having:
– either rough or smooth card outer sleeves
– either rough or smooth card inner sleeves
– either rounded or square-cornered inner sleeves
Among Tranco / PRT pressings, there is no correlation between vinyl colour and paper part variants.
These pressings have an elevated outer stamper ring.
The CBS pressings have smooth outer and inner sleeves, and are pressed on opaque black vinyl only.
These pressings have a broad stamper ring of 6.5 cm diameter.
145,091 copies were pressed in total up to 17 July 1981.
260,000 copies were pressed by the end of 1982.
UK re-releases and re-pressings:

I’ve got the brown one :)
Sounds ok to my old ears, although I wish I had kept hold of my original pressing. I vividly hearing the DJ on Radio One announcing Ian’s death. Such a sad waste of talent. Often wonder how things would have panned out if he had overcame his demons. Would JD have ended up treading similar water to U2 or the Bunnymen ? I imagine a clutch of albums post Closer up there with the first batch of Simple Minds releases : from Life In A Day through to Sparkle. Or maybe they would have continued on the dance vibe that New Order embraced and influenced.
Either way, we lost a great talent that day. -
I have a Near Mint Condition copy of interested please email me at [email protected]

Does anybody else have the side 1 and side 2 mixed up? They seem to be marked wrong on this copy for some reason.
LP sounds great btw. -

Fantastic pressing on my end without a single pop. Flat, heavy vinyl, great artwork. Seems like it’s a mixed bag on these. Mine did not include the sticker nor card inside sleeve, so most likely a repress.
Flat, dynamic and airy just like Joy Division should be heard. Great sleeve too, just wish it was a gatefold, but I digress.
For reference, played on:
Cambridge Alva TT V2
Evo 150 DeLorean Amp
Alva Duo Pre
Klipsch KG 5.2 Towers

If this is definitely a counterfeit, it's a damned good one. Very heavy vinyl, high quality sound and very good sleeve and inner. It's VERY close to an official JD release! -

I had a 1983 UK pressing of this. I did an A/B comparison and was shocked how much better this sounded. I also have the Unknown Pleasures 1st German which inspired me to try this. They both sound fantastic. -

I have a white one, not sure exactly where I picked this up, never been to Brazil. Sounds decent -
This one doesn't rip / not recognised in a PC drive so unable to rip (using dbPoweramp CD Ripper) - so you may want to avoid this version if that is important to you
