A sort by function in Master Release would be helpfull, especially for the long ones - by Label, Cat# and country.
I searched related topics but the several i found didn't have any answer.

Hello! Thanks for this suggestion and giving me another reason to work on this. I recently experienced this annoyance while trying to identify a bunch of releases. I gave up out of frustration (sore eyes maybe?).

I'm working on adding sorting to this table and any others I find (where it makes sense). I'll update this thread with any updates.

Thanks again and keep your suggestions coming! :)

Thank you very much for MS sorting. I was waiting for such a sorting function for a long time,
    but I have some suggestions.

Why does first the "unknown year" releases appears on the beginning by sorting for year. They should come at the end after the last known date.

If i sort e.g. for country the order of year is chaotic per country. It would be great if you e.g sort for country the system would the last sorting (like at excel) e.g. date and you can find the releases in the right date order.

    In addition to that...
Many releases haven't exact (known) release date. Therefore some submitters leave the year unknown, others enters the estimated year.
Therefore it would be great if we were able to give the "unknown date" releases an approximate date,
    e.g.
1980's (e.g. by entering 1980-++-++) if the release was released in the 1980's or
1976+ (e.g. by entering 1976-++-++) if the release was released after 1976, but not sure exactly 1976.

We have discussed this before, but there wasn't a resolution. Generally we are not into entering 'guessed' information, which is where the discussion fell down last time IIRC.

We have discussed this before, but there wasn't a resolution.

A "fuzzy decade" might be a solution:
    1950s
    1960s
    1970s
    etc.

  • Show this post
One suggestion: I think it would be very helpful to identify the Key Release by one way or another. For instance in a different color, or bold, or an icon with a "k", or whatever.
I would be easy to see at first sight if the Key Release is in an appropriate Year and/or Country.
    What do you think?

    edit = typo

  • Show this post
How about in addition to the ability to specify a decade, if we have an approximate release year, giving us a check box next to the release date to specify that it is approximate. Or requiring the release date be entered with a tilde in front of the date to indicate the same thing. i.e. "~1989"

I think there are a large number of releases where the exact release date is unknown, but the date can be approximated with some degree of accuracy.

In my opinion, for this particular field, approximate data is better than no data at all.

Just to be clear, I do not think that sentiment applies to anything other than a release date. And I do not currently apply that to my submissions. I try to only enter accurate dates. I am just talking about my preference. As long as the approximate date is Tagged as being approximate, then it won't be confused with specific dates.

  • Show this post

    ^^ This.
The point is that we already do add approximate dates: in the release notes.
I'm adding the note "released approximately in [time span]" to every release without a release year I've submitted ever since.
But the problem with release notes is: the data cannot be used for much else than simple reading.

So it needs either a dedicated field "Approximate Release Year", or a checkbox to the existing field, or syntax to parse the year/span/decade as fuzzy.

Then the approximate date can be evaluated at last.

    progcode
requiring the release date be entered with a tilde in front of the date to indicate the same thing. i.e. "~1989"

That's exactly the syntax I'm using since 20 years for fuzzy dates in my offline record collection database. :)

I don't know if it's related to this new MR sorting function, but I just noticed a not very welcome change on artist pages:
In the "Text Only" view the releases are now listed too "loosely", each row eating up valuable vertical space.
    I'm talking about table.discography td {padding: 7px 7px 7px 2px;}
0px 7px 0px 2px would be just right for my taste. (Added to my custom CSS, but that's not an option on iOS Safari.)

Maybe we have a chance to find a resolution, now.
    Let be honest.
How many of the release year information are not “guessed”? Good example Led Zeppelin - Untitled
Even if a release e.g. from 70’s has the same labels like the initial release it could be pressed years later, till the label design was changed.

    progcode
As long as the approximate date is Tagged as being approximate, then it won't be confused with specific dates.

    That's the point.

    loukash
But the problem with release notes is: the data cannot be used for much else than simple reading.

If you have a MR with e.g. 250 entries with 80 of them without year, so you have very low overview in the MR, even if you have this pretty sorting function. If you are looking for a specific release you have to open every single release (e.g. from same country) to get an overview.

  • Show this post
Being able to sort MRs is great, but I'd also like to have the possibility to compare releases. So to select two or three releases and view them side by side, like on the Merge page.

Not sure, if it's been mentioned before:

I'd like it, if the field for entry IDs in the MR editing form was sorted numerically. It's a nightmare to edit large MRs such as this:
    http://discogs.programascracks.com/master/edit/5319 (107 entries)

To reiterate, that's the editing form, not the MR entry itself.

That's an easy change. I'll try to get this in soon. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Show this post
    My suggestion is:
~1973 = approximately 1973, the span has to be declared at the release notes
    ~197? = a 70s release

The primary syntax should be ~ as it would be understood by everyone without clarification.
It should be mandatory to state clear notes for the reasons. At least we need some labels be tagged at the profile to state clear notes for the label design, as there are usually several version in some periodes, for example RCA Victor and similar.

Think the questionmark at the end for the decade has been repeated so often here, that is clear, we want it.
The addition here is off course the primary syntax ~ to both, the approximately year, as well as the decade. A confusion is not possible than anymore.

already happened 11 moths ago. Just the title was not that good.
    http://discogs.programascracks.com/forum/thread/52151d729469733cfcfc997c

but back again to the MR sorting.
I asked if the sorting function could be improved in that way,
that by changing the primary sorting column it takes the prior sorting column as secondary sorting column.
So we could sort the releases by e.g. country (primary) and have this sorted by e.g year. (secondary)
This would help a lot for very big Masters releases.

  • Show this post
A simple checkbox indicating approximate date would be sufficient... Maybe colour the info in red to illustrate a lower confidence in the data? As long as sources are provided, i don't have a problem with educated guesses in this example

how about not asking for sorting, but for filtering - i would find that convenient with large MRs.
