Released two years after 'Shelter', and apparently loosely based in Miyazaki's 'Mononoke Hime', 'Kodama' meant a return to Alcest's primary musical colours, and its mixture of light and darkness.
And as much as I enjoyed "Shelter", to me 'Kodama' is still one of Alcest's finest moments, including several really seriously anthemic and genre defining moments in here, namely the title track, which to me still stands as one of the band's finest and most dynamic numbers to date, and that personal favourite called 'Oiseaux De Proie', a rhythmic beast where Winterhalter shows what he can do when left unleashed, creating one of the most thrilling and exciting intros ever written for any song, and Neige's shrieks being up there with his best moments all along Alcest's discography.
It never ceases to amaze me that, in the special edition liner notes, Neige states that this song almost didn't the cut for the album!
An album that remains in a very special place within both my collection and my memory.
