Alongside the classic Industrial Strength releases, the main label to license Bloody Fist was Strike. This EP was the fourth - following "Straight Out of Newcastle", a double EP by Xylocaine and the "Strike vs Bloody Fist EP". The title supposedly comes from German artist Stickhead's description of their 8-bit mono, rough Amiga production - meant disparagingly, but taken as a badge of pride in typical Bloody Fist style.
It's a pretty typical mix for Nasenbluten. You have the straight-up hardcore, with "Holy Arse" - a chunky midtempo tune full of bleeps and effects; and "Popular Shag", which is classic Xylocaine - uptempo hardcore which is surprisingly upbeat, and packed full of distinctive non-sequitur samples.
On the B side it gets weirder. "Urinal Fun" (great title) sounds like early E-De-Cologne, with a touch of acid and a mangled new wave sample ("talkin bout...pop muzik!"). "Underground Church" has a high-speed compressed kick with what sounds like a dentist's drill over it. And "Discrete Maths" is a slower, darker track with some light breaks. There's also an interlude with someone complaining about people worshipping Satan rather than Susan or Carl, or expressing their love for egg salad...and an outro called "Farts" which is what you think it is.
However my favourite track on here is "Check the Sound" which covers the breakbeat side of Nasenbluten. An eerie beginning leads into a heavily distorted bassline, and some wonderfully chopped amens (ed by some apache breaks at points), and a few well placed samples. And there's an equally ominous orchestra sting in the middle, I feel sure sampled from some horror soundtrack, just to maintain the mood. Like most Bloody Fist breakbeat, it sounds like classic '93 amiga darkcore that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a label like Brain or Bear Necessities - and might be my favourite breakbeat Nasenbluten track.
This is definitely one of the stranger Bloody Fist EPs, but all the better for it - and worth it for "Check the Sound" alone.
