One of Jochem George Paap's all time master strokes, which was released at a time when he was mainly into producing intelligent, Warp-ish breed of techno.
Simultaneously, under his alias Public Energy, he released a four tracker called "Hemi sync", which is nothing less than what is written on the cover: 'a hardcore project by Jochem Paap'.
Kicking off with Hemi-Sync (Part One), we're given a playful melody which is soon mixed with a huge drum kick and the whole track kind of plays around with the melody-kick-break-kick-melody order of things, to an entertaining effect. The sequel to the opener, Hemi-Sync (Part Two), has a similar feel to it, yet the melody is pushed way back in the background, while the drum kick is visibly more emphasized, to the point of sounding heavily distorted, and when matched with the equally crunching bass line, it will test your speakers to the max. There are short outbursts of mad percussion during which the main drum kick is held back. Very cool stuff.
Three O' Three is the one that got the world upside down at least twice. This has got to be the simplest track ever to have received such wide spread appreciation and cult status. It's all about a goliath, smashing drum kick and a pounding bass line, with an endless and relentless acid lead going on and on for what may sound like infinity. But the whole track clocks in a little above five minutes. In the same vein as his Pull Over club hit recorded under the Speedy J moniker, Three O' Three is living proof of how you don't need to conjure the unthinkable in order to record classic stuff; the main thing is to think of it first, and throw in the right amount of already familiar ingredients. There's little in the track you haven't heard before or after, but it's the way in which he combines it all that makes Three O' Three stand about 303 feet above most of its contemporaries.
A tough feat for anybody to outmatch a track like the last one, but Benuaral Mind Generator (BMG), is right up there. Slightly less hard than the previous two numbers, it's just as driving, with a wild and frenetic lead melody on the loose, accompanied by what to me sounds like brief outbursts of radio static. The kick is less distorted and large, but it leaves more space for the absolutely furious lead to do its thing.
Overall, this is marvellous. It's a gem you need to have, you want to have (but maybe unaware of it), and will have! Speedy J producing hardcore music '92? Say what? Classic material, and if it fails to impress you, just buy it so you can play Three O' Three for your friends and show them how cool your music taste is.
