Great remastering by Stephen Marsh and Steve Hoffman! More detail, more stage and a little more punch make this SACD sound more suitable for modern hi-fi systems.
-
Great sound, second only to the Robert Ludwig/Masterdisk NL for EU Vinyl.
But, for the price of this SACD on here, you can get a turntable and that original vinyl. -
Edited 2 years ago30 years ago, 2 days ago, this album was released and two days ago I just listened to the SACD's DSD through my Onkyo receiver for the first time. I guess I'm in the minority here, got to say while Steve Hoffman's remaster is certainly more open and dynamic it's almost too dynamic. Kind of missing that crunch of the original GG Garth CD. Same for Evil Empire which I also listened to. I think I prefer the old CDs but I'd have to get used to these mixes.
Update: Listened again last night. I'll have to retract my statement and jump on the same train as y'all. It really does sound so much more open and full and nuanced compared to the distorted peaks of the original CD. The details such as the percussion really stand out so much more. Zack seems easier to understand and the instrument separation is much better in general. -
This is a really nice-sounding RM of this classic album! I didn't really feel like the treatment of Evil Empire was any better than the vinyl rips I've heard. But this debut is a keeper and the very best version I've ever heard. Recommended!

I have the means to listen to and measure the SACD content, and it beats any other pressing of this album ever.

Edited 8 years agoI've read some criticism concerning Steve Hoffman's works, and though i've never been a fan of the latter, this reissue absolutely overthrows every early version of the album.
While lacking some (LITTLE) dynamic range compared to the original pressings, this remaster gives a much more accentuated instrument separation: in fact, you can crank up the volume of your system without fatiguing your ears and still enjoy one of the best albums of this genre.
Note: since i don't have a SACD player, i can only talk about the redbook layer. -
My first SaCD. Wow, I blown away, this mastering brings even more appreciation to this album, that I have owned for over 20 years on CD, and a recent vinyl release. The detail in the instrumentation is outstanding.
