Edited 2 years agoI got this UK mono version of the Magical Mystery Tour EP several years ago at a record fair. My version is missing one of the original paper sleeves, has some teenager's name on it, and has the laminate peeling off, possibly because of outgassing from an old PVC sleeve that I have since thrown away. The records themselves are in pretty beaten up condition, but play OK.
I have just finished comparing this 1967 mono pressing with the mono CD release of 2009. I was somewhat surprised, given the crackly vinyl, that the original pressing is still superior to the CD. There is not much need to A-B between the two for the most part. I would describe the vinyl as having a more insistent and forward sound to the vocals. I Am The Walrus is particularly impressive. The only exceptions are the tracks The Fool On the Hill and Flying, which sound pretty similar between the two.
If you are fond of Magical Mystery Tour, try getting this mono UK first pressing. I think you will find the sound a worthy upgrade.
(For what it's worth, I also spent time comparing my Australian single version of Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane to the same mono CD. Both blew the CD out of the water.) -
One Of The Very Best Things The Beatles Ever Did, I Absolutely Love Magical Mystery Tour As It Was Made By The Fab 4 As A Double EP. This First Mono Pressing Sounds Absolutely Wonderful With That Big Bold Full Bodied Mono Sound Erupting With Major Presence From The Speakers. It Has Such Smoothness In The Bass And Top End Detail That I Honestly Prefer It To The 2012 And 2014 Mono Remastered EP And LP. The Packaging Is Superb And Definitely Feels Like The Perfect Companion Piece For The MMT Movie With The Comic Strip And Photos But Also Having It Be On The 7" Format Makes It Feel No Bigger Than A Comic Book And It Fits Nicely On My Book Shelf Next To My Record Player And LP Collection. Can't Recommend This Enough, Especially If You Can Get One In NM Shape Regardless If It's Mono Or Stereo. Although In My Opinion The Mono Feels More Complete Sound Stage Wise Than The Stereo.
