In 1992, the south of England’s answer to the Gallagher brothers rebounded from ‘Midnight/Choice’’s failure to chart, marking a triumphant return to the Top 40 with their ‘Mutations’ and ‘Radiccio’ EPs. Their 11-minute masterpiece 'Halcyon' opens the latter and is rightly renowned as a sunset special, with Paul and Phil Hartnoll using all tools at their disposal to access a new domain of sonic experience: its lightness and limpidity is rare in the world of electronica, as is its ability to sustain the listener for the entire duration.

Sunday was good enough to make it to some Goa Trance dance floors in the early 90's. Was good enough to make it to all dance floors in the early 90's. Good enough to make it to dance floors today.

Edited 8 years agoNoticed today that my copy is starting to suffer with the common CD oxidization issue from the 90s.

Not sure of the story of the naming behind this track having anything to do with a certain prescription medication the Hartnoll's mom was apparently addicted to, but the drug is spelled 'Halcion', the word 'Halcyon', like the song title, basically means 'tranquil' which I guess is where the drug's name comes from. But the medication is spelled differently from the song title, either because of copyright I guess, or because the song is peaceful and blissful just like the meaning of the word.
