Madlib – Piñata

Solid ass pressing. Not sure if some other people got booty pressings or what, but I had no issues, sans the sliiiiighhhtest bit of dishing, and I’m talking minute. That’s just me being extremely nitpicky.

Records had no noise for me. At all. None between songs, none during songs. Soundstage/EQ/mix is great, honestly more dynamic than I thought it’d be given a couple people’s reviews. Warm, rich, punchy lows. Crisp, bright, clean highs. Nothing to complain about there. Really did sound great from beginning to end.

Pressing: 8.5/10

Really disappointed with this one. First record has a really good sound thanks to the mastering, even though there is a fair amount of surface noise.
But on the C side, from Broken on, it is absolutely unlistenable!! Sounds muddy as hell. This one is returning.

Really a pity because on the first record, you can tell mastering is really good. Sounds are clear, bass heavy, separation is awesome, Gibbs sounds so close I feel like i could almost smell his breath.

And Jesus, the record came SO DIRTY, bits of paper everywhere from these horrifying paper sleeves (there should be a law against them). So much static… cleaned it and it still sounds pretty noisy.

Vinyl is also really thin, can probably go warped easily.

My vinyl has the side c and d lables mixed up. Is that a normal issue with this vinyl? Does anyone else's have that?

Robes, Broken and High sound great on my pressing, makes me happy as they are some of my top favorites. but I noticed that on Uno, Freddie's vocals sound noticeably more quieter than the instrumental of the song. That disappointed me

Such a hip-hop masterpiece. Would love to collect some of the other versions ('84 cover looks sick). Sonically, this is one of the better hip-hop records I own on vinyl. Madlib beats at its finest, plus Freddie's grizzly flow. Highly recommended.

Another Madlib classic and Freddie's best to date. The sound is great...no complaints here. Good separation of sounds, clean. Glad I picked this one up. For $20 out the door it was a no brainer.

Frederick Gibbs surely has come into his own in recent times, I think it is very good he has made friends with Madlib and The Alchemist, they are really helping him to achieve his dreams so Frederick Gibbs, if you are reading this, I am glad you are doing well in your chosen career as a rapping musician!!

Two years later and it still holds its own weight. As usual Madlib contributes some amazing instrumentals that leave you wondering, "where did he sample that one"?? Madlib is a master at this and he shows the world just how great he is. Freddie Gibbs does not disappoint with his lyrics and his flow on even the most tricky of Madlib beats. These two were just a great combo and it flowed nicely. What can I say that has not already been said. Love it, have it, and cherish it in my collection. This album will be talked about for years to come! Love me some REAL Hip Hop, Thanks Madlib and Freddie!
