Some copies with a sticker on the front jewel case saying "DELUXE EDITION Including bonus DVD featuring 5.1 version of Playing The Angel, Making The Angel documentary, Precious video and exclusive performance of Clean".
DVD contains the entire "Playing The Angel" album in either LPCM Stereo, DTS 5.1 & Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and has a running time of 52:40. DVD tracks 2 to 4 are in LPCM Stereo. All Photos in the Photo Gallery taken by Ben Hillier.
Official release date is Monday the 17th October 2005, but available via Mute on Friday the 14th October 2005.
The booklet mistakenly credits Dave McCracken as the piano player in "I Want It All". However, there is no piano in "I Want It All". He really should be credited for the piano in "The Darkest Star."

An Old Fashion Way to see how compressed the music are, to record this on an old Fashion Recorder (CD/HDD Recorder or Old Fashion Cassette). The Peak Limiter Display dances with dynamic source and will stay over Seconds on one Position, If the hell is compressed out of it. I record a lot of music on my Yamaha CDR-HD 1300 (mostly ripping my vinyl and some CDs) and can not only hear a dynamic recording, i can see it in my Record Level Meter. And this SACD has a much more dynamic SACD Stereo Layer than the Red Book CD Layer.

Edited 3 years agoI cannot let the comments above overrate the mastering done. First, I did a test on the SACD 2.0 channel layer and the original CD layer, and if the loudness is leveled, it is the same source. It just happens that the SACD 2.0 is quieter when it was authored, but not one single dynamic boost comparing to the brickwalled CD. Now, the SACD 5.1 mix is a total different story. However, notice that this is to be played on a 5.1 setup -- downmixing works for some tracks but quite a few of them do sound "funny" when downmixed to stereo (John the Revelator, for instance). 5.1 music is not for 2.0 listening. So make no mistake - SACD 2.0 and CD are the same source.

Something weird about this album on SACD for me... Back in 2005, when kids were sharing music over bluetooth, I had received a file called Precious.mp3. I've stumbled across it recently when digging through my old hard drives, and decided to plug it into iZotope for laughs.
Turns out, that no-breed bastard mp3 had been a SACD rip! Meaning, someone had the audacity to buy a SACD player, buy this album, plug it into their PC, record the thing (no scad rippers yet) and release it into the wild.
No-name hero, I salute your dedication. -
Edited 10 years agoIt's a shame that the mastering(as it was previously mentioned) for both the CDDA & DVD tracks is a mess, not very enjoyable.
So I ripped the SACD content for myself, hoping... It worked!
SACD mastering is fine, after a little levelling/amplifying/converting into more convenient format & it sounds far better.
