Disco d’esordio a metà degli anni ottanta per gli Housemartins. Categoria indie-pop e una strumentazione essenziale come quella di un complessino punk di dieci anni prima. Una dozzina di canzoni orecchiabili e di facile presa, che per una volta non parlano di bisticci d’amore quanto invece del disagio di vita della classe operaia, con una grande qualità compositiva e senza retorica, in poco più di tre minuti ciascuna. Per citare le mie preferite direi «Flag Day» - venata di soul – e poi «Happy Hour» (per quegli impiegati della city, che aprono il portafogli invece del cervello: “Where they open all their wallets / And they close all their minds”); «Sheep» (a deplorare l’ovina apatia di chi non si ribella); e anche «Think For A Minute», tanto per non dimenticare il magico falsetto di P.D. Heaton, vero elemento identitario del sound della band e autore di tutti i pezzi assieme a Stan Cullimore, chitarra solista. Gli altri due componenti sono Norman Cook al basso (che poi negli anni ’90 diventerà piuttosto noto come Fatboy Slim, DJ e produttore di electro-dance) e Dave Hemingway alla batteria. Il pianoforte ospite è di Pete Wingfield (ottimo in «Flag Day» e nell’intimista «Lean On Me») mentre l’armonica che salta fuori nello strumentale «Revenge Revenge» è suonata (bene) da Heaton. I riferimenti del titolo dell’album sono “roba per inglesi” e tanto vale cercarli su internet che si fa prima. La foto dei quattro sul fronte e retro di copertina (raffinata e minimalista) è coerente con l’impostazione ideologica – trade-unionista e anti-tatcheriana – dei loro testi. Nella riedizione in CD ci sono 4 canzoni extra, cosa che in genere non mi piace molto, ma qui almeno questi pezzi - se non aggiungono nulla di rilevante (però emozionano le cover di People Get Ready e He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, moderni spiritual cantati a cappella) - nemmeno nuocciono all’equilibrio del disco che resta per me MOLTO BUONO e consigliato.

Growing up in the midwest US wilderness, and with no knowledge of anything, I always figured these guys were imitating the Smiths, but with more political lyrics. But whether they were or not, this album was one of my favorites back when, and it remains so today. Super catchy, great basslines, great album!
