Notes
Reissue of the tracks on the US CD version, hence tracks A4 and E2 (popularly known as 'Hankie' and 'Stone in Focus') originally released on WARPLP21 in 1994, are not included. The artwork with divided circles found within the gatefold and on the back cover is meant to represent the album tracks, but is faulty due to these two missing tracks. This pressing has been disowned by WARP, however it is licensed from Sire.
Sticker on front cover reads:
"a landmark of the Ambient genre: Richard D. James' soulful, electronic holy music continues to bewilder nearly two decades later. if11"
Issued in a gatefold cover. Includes an 11.5" by 11.5" semi-glossy single-sided paper insert.

pleased i sold my copy a few months before the release of 2023 warp reissue which is superior in so many ways. was shocked at how much coin i was able to fetch at my local record store for the 1972 pressing. i always disliked its rather rough surface noise. it lacked warmth and dynamics which the recent warp reissue resolves.

Edited 8 months agoSo much negativity here - you gotta pay to play, people. Mr. AFX is a top tier artist. Period.
-
I bought this back in 2012 for retail pricing and had no idea it's inflation. After reading the comments about sound quality I decided to give it a run-through. I am not sure where the complaints come from, I think it's a great sounding press with negligible surface noise.
-
Its funny, there are people saying the pressing is not good. Its fine. There are no pops, clicks; dynamics are great. Lush and warm sound. I have had all pressings (got rid of most) and this by far is the best. Project, bronze ortofon, kanto tuks.
Those complaining may need a new TT other than what you can find for 100 bucks on amazon or at hmv.
The original brown pressing is terrible, the original black pressing terrible, the reissue after this one is not bad. This is by far the best. I have the cd too. This is by far more spacious and dynamic than a cd lol.
And who cares if stone in focus is not on here. Its one track and its a typical ambient track lol. Maybe its the price pissing people off. And maybe, many just don't even have it and are saying they do and complaining to make it like this is not worth it. We have seen that before.
Anyone interested in this release, go for it. Of course - a NM OR M copy. Go for a VG and well, if you know vinyl, then you are taking a risk. -
Sound quality is just fine. Not sure what the fuss is. Some may think it's a little noisy. I agree the pressing's not perfectly quiet, but it's not intrusive at all. Adds a nice vintage vibe to the proceedings :)

I've had this since 2014 and it came with a second copy of the 1st disc in place of the 2nd, so if anyone out there has an extra copy of C/D and is missing A/B hit me up....

Edited 3 years agoThis sounds very good!! I just did a head to head with my brown original. I bought this knowing that it lacked the two tracks, but it was cheap, and the original vinyl was expensive and hard to find even in 2012, so I was thinking, "a second copy of this master piece? Why not!".
I have a hard time hearing that this would be a "CD master pressed to vinyl". It might be that the tracks were licensed as the original US CD, but this sounds too good to be just a CD source. I reckon it has been mastered for vinyl, no clue of course what kind of master they had access to, but this is not at all bad.
Others here have also made the comparison and came to the same conclusion. Granted, Afx is not hi-fi music like Yello/Boris Blank, but we all love this music, and this 1972 pressing is more than adequate, apart from the obvious two missing tracks, but if that was needed to make it happen, so be it.
10 years later, and absolutely no sign of a warp repress. That makes 25 missing tracks instead of just two!
ps. I'm not taking into the current 2nd hand prices for this US reissue, $200??!! I'm still living in the universe where I got this for a tenth of that, about $23 if my memory is any good. -
obviously having stone in focus is a must and the warp pressings sound better but my copy sounds fine some people here seriously are overreacting lol

My copy was dogshit awful from the shop when i bought it new back in 2014(?) and its still like spinning sandpaper now. Missing 2 of the best tracks and sounds like garbage? What a steal for only a couple hundred quid!!
Save your pennies and buy one of the official pressings, its not worth the risk of burning a hundred odd quid if you get one of the crap copies.
I was pissed off it cost me 20 from hmv back then, cant imagine how gutting it would be to pay the prices these are going for now.
Also, love reading comments about de-staticing and "learn how to clean before complaining" what dya think the first thing we all did when hearing this on our decks was?
Its bad. But then again..you might get lucky and end up with a bootleg of a seminal ambient cd with only a handful of intrusive pressing issues for a couple hundred bucks so if thats the kinda risk you're willing to take inflate those prices, baby!
Nothin quite beats the ambient/noise fusion experiance presented by the folks at 1972. -
At last I can compare this edition, which I owned for almost 10 years, and the 1994 black one, both in pristine condition. After years reading about this 1972 2012 pressing, I found a surprise: they sound virtually IDENTICAL. This pressing is a little bit better than the 1994 one, sounds cleaner and quieter overall, but it could be the copies (even they seem unused). The only downside of this pressing is that it lacks "Stone in Focus", I love the track, yes, but come on, this is a whole incredible album!
And if you are going to pay an extra 400€ for just one song... you're a rich idiot who deserve to pay that price :)
PS: By the way, the comparison was made with two Technics 1200 and two different cartridge sets: two Ortofon Nightclub MK2, and two Ortofon 2M Bronze, with a Rane TTM57 SL turntable for real A/B comparison, playing both lps at the same time and changing from one to the other instantaneously.
