Not many modern records are recorded, mixed and mastered this well. Everything about this 45 RPM edition is amazing.
Huge soundstage and great separation. Roaring bass, crisp drums and crunchy guitar. Vocal is clear and upfront. Superior to what’s on streaming services. The dynamic range is preserved instead of it being brickwalled.
Glad to have this in my collection! -
I played this today for the first time in a long time. I had forgotten how good some of these songs are! As for the sound quality, the low end is nice and deep without being too bloated, and the drums are pretty punchy. Everything sits well in the mix though it is a little crushed. ("Gold On The Ceiling" sounds particularly good!) The vocals are clear with good space around them, and the keyboard and organ elements fill in nicely. However, the higher frequencies, particularly on the guitars, are a little harsh. When I crank it on more layered songs like "Dead And Gone" or the loud part of "Little Black Submarines," it can be a tad fatiguing. Cymbals are washed out and a little thin sounding, and the whole thing feels cold. I'm guessing this is all a result of it being a digital recording but I could be wrong. I do think it sounds better and more natural than the CD & streaming versions. It has more presence and "liveliness" and, to my ears, sounds a little less compressed. It's worth picking up this 45 RPM version if you don't have a vinyl copy, but don't expect a sonic miracle.
