Kendrick waited a decade until DJ Mustard's sound lost popularity to bring it back on "GNX".
An 80's Buick is the spirit animal of this beast of a record and it's fitting given the warrior spirit behind it - taken from K.Dot's Pop's gangbanging transitional days.
The album is more than shots at emcee's, but those are the better records on "GMX". A very egoic Kendrick basking in the accolades of his success, the only low points are whenever someone not named Kendrick speaks on the LP.
"The Heart Pt.6" walk down memory lane, that "25 to Life" metaphor on "Gloria", the storytelling on "Reincarnated" these artistic highpoints of "GNX". The rest of the album is mostly Kendrick banging on wax like on no other record in his discography over samples that could possibly be found blaring at an 80's car show on Crenshaw.
"Hey Now", "Peekaboo", "TV Off","Squabble Up" are all fun club bangers, thanks to Kendrick's quirky cadence flips, but still carry intentional menace - a continuation of sorts to the "Not Like Us" single.
Noticably, Kendrick takes his time to sing more polished than in any of his other LPs here on "GNX", as if the LP serves as an attempt to fill the lane he created after slaughtering Drake earlier in the year.
But "GNX" is more than an extension to rap beef.
A war record, a love record, a record about Kendrick's family history and what he is doing to further his families legacy; "GNX" may be nowhere near that van on "GKMC" but it's supposed to be. A "GNX" is for riders and this is definitely rider music, not that family van.
TDE-Kendrick was a family affair. "GNX" is Kendrick staking his claim to start his own legacy as PGLang's flagship title. And as long as Kendrick keeps his foot on the gas and dumps his homies out for PGLang's next effort since they dragged down this effort, Kendrick's legacy will continue to be running at top speed.
And yes, Dodger Blue over Angel Red. Kendrick consistently proves he is on the right side of history.
