I find it one of the best idm records of the 90ies
Smoke. Spliff and listen again..if you don't like it

recently re-listened to this, i always had a soft spot for it but this has aged so bloody well, it sounds even better...there is so much going on in each track, puzzle pieces moving around, the lightness of touch and the humour never undermines the directness of sound....and they know just when to push into some grit...the best black dog and one of the best electronic albums from this crazily inventive period - superb record

for some reason this album sounds better and better produced every year since it was released. The initial bunch of tracks are unbeatable (I have a very strong love for "Barbola Work", a pure Plaid work), but half way it gets trippy through an atmosphere so thick that makes a black hole out of your speakers/headphones. This is the most unique work for the three original Black Dog together, an album whose tracks are very different to each other to the point that they seem like they are fighting but also they have a lot of things in common and they seem like they are strongly hugging and not letting anyone .

Edited 4 years agoI want "Chesh" to be played at my funeral, probably in my top 3 favorite electronic compositions I have ever heard. Up there with E2-E4. A perfect soundtrack to the struggle of life, and the never ending beauty of the journey that keeps you fascinated yet sorrowful of the process.

I worship this record and still listen to it today with emotion and a sense of discovery as new sounds and textures appear to my ears and mind. A record to listen entirely in a row not as we are used to do these days with streaming sites and mp3s.
If anyone has information on whose voices are heard on « Chase the Manhattan » I would be very grateful to him or her. A 25 years old enigma for me. -
For me you can't compare Bytes to Spanners or visa versa. Both albums are completely different with different objectives, both stand equally but in vastly different places.

My friend found a copy of this in a skip in Brighton, and kindly gave it to me. It was in NM condition and contained a press release... Amazing album that I still treasure to this day, the music within defies definition really. Timeless.

i seeing the 9/10 review from NME and went out that day and bought it. if you listen to this the only thing letting on its from circa 94 is the inside cover. Superb track after track, its money well spent...a must have CD for the car.
Essential vinyl for your collection.... Another great WARP release -
Awesome album and even though the computer graphics involved on most of the early Black Dog cover artwork is of it's day the music held within is timeless and I for one find it just as refreshing to listen to 20yrs after it was made! 10 out of 10!!
