Going against the grain here…my copy is pretty good. Seems like this is a QC issue and I lucked out. I read the reviews before buying but pulled the trigger because this album is a must have and these are the only pressings available. Have a scratch for about 15secs on ‘Who Are You’ but otherwise entirely acceptable by my standards. The record is indeed quiet though…possibly the most quiet in my collection. That would be a big issue if I had crackles….but all good. (The remastering is excellent by the way) if you are like me and really really wanted this album on vinyl…I’d say it’s worth the gamble but seems more likely that you will lose based on the number of negative reviews. (From this set Island Remasters, I also have Franks Wild Years which is excellent….and Swordfish….which is garbage….seems like a mixed bag in general)

Tittz on a Rittz. Heavy black vinyl. Gave it a wet wipe down. Just listened on a holiday morning. And it sounds amazing. Zero noise. Flat like a pancake. So good.

Big Bummer! Confirming this press is mastered very quietly and experienced surface noise throughout like others have stated.
-
Great album, terrible noise. Every track on the album has surface noise. It’s very noticeable. I cleaned it and it made no difference. Don’t buy it unless you get it cheap, like I did.
-
Decided to finally get this after the first round of complaints. Price has finally fallen, so I grabbed it.
Following on from others, I have some surface noise, but nothing that would cause me to return it. It is mastered very low volume wise, and I have to wonder why. It's fair enough to say "just turn it up", but that's not really a satisfactory response. Cranking the volume will also cause any defects to be boosted, especially if you have a scratch of some kind. Who was this mastered for?
But my main thought is that, frankly, the original CD sounds better. Whereas I've always thought of this album as a rather lively experiment, it lays out here very tepid and almost laid back. It's smoother in presentation, more relaxed. Not sure that's how I want my Bone Machine.
Worth getting? Well, Bone Machine is one heck of an album. It's on Vinyl, so if that's your format, then sure. But if I'm asked what I recommend for a newcomer, then I'd say grab an original CD for next to nothing. I've not heard the remastered CD, so don't know how that goes. -
Got lucky with this one, unlike Swordfish through Frank's Wild Years. The surface noise is a minimum. I have to crank my preamp up and bump up the bass a hair, and this is pretty good sounding. This and each of the other Island remasters should have been released as 2LP releases.
-
Like others have said, it was mastered low, but just turn up the volume a little more. No biggie at all. My copy is flat, no pops/cracks, and sounds absolutely great for $20. This is such a great album front to back.
-
Turn up the volume knob and it sounds just fine. Really. Ignore the noise. Headroom can be your friend.
-
If you cut a greasy pizza box into a circular shape and smeared dog turd on top it would sound like this record.
