In addition to my first Japanese press of Ride The Lighting, I purchased the 1989 reissue from Vertigo.
Japanese LP from Nexus.
The recording volume level is noticeably lower compared to the reissue. Cliff Burton's bass guitar is powerful in the foreground, the guitars are pushed into the background. The disc sounds velvety, pleasant, but not very dynamic.
European LP from Vertigo.
The bass guitar and bass drums sound great, but the guitars also take center stage. Lars Ulrich's drum ages are well mixed and they sound impressive. The sound produces creates the feeling of a better panorama and better dynamics. -
I have a mint copy of this version. Bought it from a seller in Japan and it's a thing of beauty with that obi. Sounds huge as well. If you have the opportunity to pick up a copy in good condition I recommend you go for it.
