In 2005 at the NOW now festival in Sydney Clare Cooper and Chris Abrahams played a remarkable set of miniature pieces. Short and sweet is rare in serious music, but these two took a microscope to scale and produced refreshing and brilliant music. The brevity of their statements was matched by their concentration and intensity – nothing was superfluous.
4 years later after a long process of recording and editing, splitrec is proud to be able to release such a lovingly designed and musically strong statement as Germ Studies.
From the 1st track on disk 1, Acid Shower – 0.16, to the last track on disk 2, Angry Climax – 0.36, small scale is rigourously adhered to, but the end result is a major statement over the 198 tracks. It's as if each of the microorganisms has all the information to develop into bigger organisms – there are some fecund moments, but the players keep moving on. In the end though, the resulting macrostructure of the 2 CDs, is formally unique.
Chris is well known for his inspirational, lyrical and generally large scale piano work in The Necks. It is not so well known that he is a master on the DX7 and has been deeply involved with improvised music in Sydney for 3 decades.
Clare is one of the main reasons that exploratory and improvised music in Sydney has become so strong over the past few years. Her Guzheng, despite it's Chinese origin, is rarely idiomatic, and the purity of the sound world used by the players, despite their immense differences, creates a sparkling juxtaposition of sounds. It is the maintenance of their individual strengths that creates the space in this music – they rarely mimic or merge.
For the release they asked hundreds of people to illustrate each of the 198 tracks with a small Germ, and this is presented as a fold out poster. -
... pieces flit to life like mating cells, making skewed, suprise lurches and appearing generally feverish throughout. The interplay between artists is never less than enthralling, their actions raw, revealing, and lovingly recorded, a ceaseless procession of sounds veering off in all directions. Instrumentally its an odd pairing, sure, but seen as an updated form of the violin sonata, in Webern-esque miniature, drawn by post-onkyo minimalists, it begins to make sense.
