this one was a surprise for me, and i am in no ways an industrial fan - rather, a kind of an observer. there was a recent iration of the "vintage" synth sounds, and the use of overdrive, with that witch house hype.. i myself always wanted to know what's going on in the industrial scene, but the "classic" stuff from the mid-80s to mid-90s never clicked anything in me, somehow. Geography reminded me in particular of the first two Human League albums, but being kind of colder and more punchy. what i really liked are sound textures - i am on the verge of falling in love with the way the whole thing sounds. i don't know if it's because of the production on the remastered version, or the actual synths they used, but i kind of get hooked on every note - not because of the actual melody, but because of the way it sounds. and yes! there are melodies too - and everything is VARIED!! not repetitive stuff, nor that aggressive - its INTERESTING!
a reviewer in allmusic.com compared Geography to early Depeche Mode stuff, or at least found that comparison not groundless. and it suits me fine, because this album carries the playfulness and danceability of pop into this colder and more atmospheric/ambient/mechanistic context - i mean it's such an interesting experiment. and that's why i adored this album from its first notes. i can't say i like their later stuff that much, although i wish i have heard more - again, i am jugding personally.
