Yeah, and the 2 extra tracks were the 12" long versions of their 1st two singles making it effectively a "greatest hits to date" and nearly an hour long.
I reading in the UK music trade magazine "Music Week" at the time that not only did the UK arm of Atlantic splash out money on the new artwork, but also £250k (quite a hefty amount back in those days when a 12" was 99p) on a TV advertising campaign featuring the same cover model & her neon light tube in action.. but they neglected to mention it to the U.S. arm or the band (well to-be-fair it was standard practice for a US record company to completely revise UK artists track-listings and cover art back in the 60s & 70s due to their alleged superior knowledge of their citizens sensitivities - consider all the liberties taken with the Beatles early albums - which always tended to result in less tracks for more bucks!)
Apparently the band (not surprisingly really) hated the revised anonymous artwork (after all they had gone to all the trouble of having a band photo shoot for this one, the first album just had a couple of models on the cover) and demanded it be withdrawn & revert back to the U.S. look and track order. I wonder if they realised all that wasted spend would eventually get taken out of their artists royalties like everything always eventually does!
IMHO the UK guys should have added the 2 tracks and kept the superior & classier original artwork & then they'd probably have flogged a whole lot more without any justifiable band objections, it being the bands best-selling UK album when disco was at its commercial & artistic height peaking at #2 even with just the 2 hit singles on it. File under "missed opportunity" :-)
Everyone know the story of "Le Freak" which name-checks Studio 54? According to Nile Rodgers Grace Jones had suggested they come along to a major party at the club, New Years Eve '77 I think, but when they got there the notoriously fickle/draconian door staff had no idea who they were (perhaps that was why they became so keen to appear on their own LP covers?) and they all got refused ittance regardless of their verbal invite from Ms Jones, who we can but speculate was probably knee deep in coke and as high as the chandeliers if legend and reputation of those heady hedonistic crazy nights are anything to go by. So, rejected and angry they all trooped off for a late-night jam and laid down a bitter and angry message aimed directly at those foolish 54 doorstaff with the original hook being "Awwwhhhh, F**k You!" only later being transformed into a #1 dance anthem that actually praised the 54 "Just come on down, to the 54, Find a spot out on the floor.."(presumably after they'd secured their rightful place on the 54 guestlist & probably an apology in the form of certain complimentary refreshments that Nile & Bernie became big fans of) & the hook evolved into the inoffensive "Awwwhhhhh, Freak Out!"
Hmmm.. those original demo mixes recorded that fateful night would sure make very attractive bonus tracks for a 45th Anniversary reissue in 2023 and probably launch another 100 classic re-edits to inject some fresh life into a bona fide dance classic! (Yeah I know the 54th anniversary would be even more fitting but c'mon thats a very long time to wait!) -

Edited 8 years agoUnder the "notes" part it is written that; "Same Tracklist And Catalog# As The C'est Chic Album But Another Album Title."
That is not exactly right. The "Trest Chic" album, which was withdrawn, has 2 more songs on its tracklist than "C'est Chic"
A5 Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah) & B5 Everybody Dance
This 2 tracks were from their previous album "Chic" (1977)
