This is one of the best records I own and it is absolutely perfect. Flat, clean, and extremely well mastered.
Can't overstate the genius of Dolphy and this incredible cast. Almost unbelievable. -
Absolutely amazing pressing! Mine is clean, flat as a pancake, and sounds amazing.
I’ve waited for this album for so long, I didn’t want stream it or listen to it digitally. This little “present” to myself doesn’t disappoint!
Amazing music, amazing quality! -
A fantastic album and a fantastic pressing over all. There are a few very short ages on side B with non-fill artefacts, otherwise it’s very good. I have the Van Gelder edition CD also which also sounds very good but this is even better.

Edited 11 months agoFirst things first: this is easily up there with KoB, Shape of Jazz and Love Supreme as some of the greatest music ever put to tape. Like those, this also redefined what jazz could be.
The mastering is phenomenal here. Crystalline image, huge soundstage and tons of detail (sax keys and brush strokes. Lucky to live in time with pressings like these.
I could have done with less noise, however. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but it shouldn’t be the amount I’m getting. Did a cleaning right out of the package and have spun it four times. It’s cleared up a bit and hopefully will continue.
But honestly don’t let that deter you from this otherwise incredible pressing.

Edited one year agoThis sounds great, the effect of the stereo sound is impressive, close your eyes and you can see the band. GREAT pressing, even greater album. Anthony Williams on the drums is a beast, there is a hardcore groove on every track, heavily ed by
Rchard Davis on the bass, add Hubbard and Hutcherson to that band, wait, there is one more. Eric Dolphy? A genius, surrounded by... other geniuses. Sounds to good to believe, Try it on your own, wild stuff. I would send this shxt to space for all other beings out there to enjoy. Mulder, me on that issue, i believe;-) -

Edited 2 years agoJust received my copy. It sounds as amazing as everyone else says. However, something weird happened with the shrinkwrap: it seems to have been applied too tightly, meaning all four of the corners arrived with minor crinkling. It's not the end of the world, but I like my audiophile records to look as good as they sound. I bought this (new) from a seller on eBay, so it's probably not worth the hassle of trying to exchange it.

My pressing was pristine, with almost no surface noise of any kind - even the quiet parts; light clicks are very few and far between.
The recording sounds brand new. Every instrument is sharp, with the drums being the most visceral. There's a xylophone in the middle, towards the back, and it has nice zing to it. The bass is in the middle, back, and you can hear it quite well; you can easily hear plucks as they are sharply rendered. The saxophone is very present in one channel, and the trumpet is the same in the other channel. It's easy to hear every instrument.
There is a lot of stuff going on in this album. I hear a flute in the left channel sometimes.
As it stands right now, this is the best pressing of any Classic Reissue Series records that I own. It is hilariously quiet.
