Edited one year agoFor Vader, "De Profundis" is one of the most important albums in the band's career. With all the undoubted advantages of the debut work "The Ultimate Incantation", it was from the second album of these Polish guys that the whole world really heard. A damn catchy album with an intense rhythm section, a series of powerful speeds and constant insane solos that have become one of the Vader's "calling cards". In fact, no matter how much you listen to this album, you can always turn it on again and it will sound "fresh". Everything that Vader is was forged on The Ultimate Incantation and fixed on De Profundis, then the group in different compositions under the constant leadership of P.W. just developed ideas on this foundation. If anyone re the soviet terminology, there used to be not only "the leaders of the band", but each was assigned an artistic director (художественный руководитель). Peter's perseverance and hard work can only be applauded, he and his mates were really able to bring the band to the highest echelon.
The reasons why the vinyl version of this masterpiece album was released 26 years after the release, for me personally remains unclear. But, as they say, better late than never - and this day has come. First of all, it's worth talking about sound. The sound of the instruments is dominated by the Pan Docent and the drums on this vinyl sound louder and powerful than all guitars, bass and vocals. The second dominant position of the solo guitar is that the accents are very well placed here, but the rhythm guitar and bass in the mix are a little short of space, the vocals are also not brought forward enough, in some places it sounds quiet and not powerful enough, from which the emotional degree is lost. Of course, the restoration and remastering of a quarter-century-old recording is a painstaking business, and it is worth believing that the engineers got the most out of the recording. An alternative is perhaps a CD, where due to the specifics of the format and some compression, the balance of the instruments feels different. Perhaps, after so many years, you just need to get used to vinyl. The sound of the vinyl is clean enough, but there is a bit of sand between the tracks on my copy.
As for the design, in comparison with the old CDs, the design code for the lyrics has been changed, there are some notes, but in general, the booklet on the one hand is made stylishly, but not very informative and not effective - a lot of empty space. Hard workers like Vader have a hundred posters from tours, it was possible to give a little nostalgia at the expense of old archives. The cherry on the cake is the color of the vinyl itself. Here, the eyes just rejoice when you look at this combination of colors. There is a criminal thought that this vinyl is more "beautiful" than "musical" =)
Some criticism on my part is based solely on my not indifference to this release. Again, this is a damn cool album. And personal expectations are justified rather than not justified. It's not a shame to advise vinyl for a collection and a great listening experience. -
