Ken Ishii's Flare project seems to be his depository for his more IDM-tinged works. On _Reference to Difference_, you can hear how the more mellow beats of "Out of the Inside" anchor the layers of sound that Ishii specializes in. "Nervewrench" places its angular metallic tones into a nearly beatless setting, while "Morceau" gurgles before blossoming into a flight of robotic birds. “Non Essentia” wobbles and sweeps its way into your consciousness, and “Interjection” twists its melodic lines into a thick vortex. The ambient “Into the Inside” ends the album on a blissful note that isn’t afraid of a complex interlude. A classic from the good old days of IDM.
