Notes
The last pressing on Plain before their license ran out was this edition of 1000 on red vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, individually numbered on a sticker on the back cover. Plain white inner sleeve, like [=r243919], but unlike the first press, Loveless, which featured a glossy cardstock inner.
According to the band, this pressing was mastered from CD, not the original master tapes. But the master tapes are digital (16/48 DAT).

Definitely gotta have it. It's from Plain Recordings, and it sounds worse than a picture disc pressed in Colombia, BUT IT'S ON RED VINYL, DUDE!!! TAKE MY WALLET NOW!!!!

Shields has denounced the version put out by Plain for Warner Brothers, basically calling it the bane of his existence in so many words. You want the pure analog copy put out by My Bloody Valentine in 2018 or pure analog copy put out by Domino in 2021. (There is a second version by Domino in 2021 that is a uncompressed digital filed committed to vinyl that was also overseen by Shields that has its merits.) Shields oversaw all three of these pressings and spent a huge amount of time and money creating the all analog iteration. The all analog pressing sounds three dimensional. No comparison to the other versions. If you only have the Plain version, you really haven't heard the album. Sorry. You can get a great new copy cheap from either Domino if you live in Europe or mybloodyvalentine.org if you live in the States for not much money. The versions from 2018 and 2021 are the best versions to own according to Kevin Shields and I agree. Avoid all colored versions as they are bootlegs. The Plain may be semi-official but it is atrocious if you know what the album is supposed to sound like.

For the love of god don't buy this record, I don't know how Warner did it but they messed it right up and the whole thing sounds horrible. Kevin Shields has said this publicly already. If you have a copy (I'm sorry), feel free to go to spotify and do an A/B test because even basic spotify quality sounds way better. The world would be a better place if every last copy were burned.

Having owned this version, the Shields remaster, and an original Townhouse DMM cut, this was far and away the worst of the three. The tracks start out sounding fine but the inner tracks are incredibly distorted to the point where it was nearly unlistenable. I Only Said sounded like telephone company hold music.

Edited 4 years agoBeware of the bootleg versions that don't have the numbered stamp located at the lower right corner on the back of the album cover.

Recently said by Kevin Shields in a pitchfork interview (http://www.pitchfork.com/features/interviews/8809-kevin-shields/):
"..in America, Warner Bros. licensed Loveless and Isn't Anything to Plain Records, and they basically just ripped [the audio] off the CD and put it on vinyl [in 2003]. They did an awful, terrible job. It was done without my permission, and the sound quality was 100% wrong. It was a rip off to anyone who bought it."
