Notes

Tool's first official 4 Track Demo was manufactured at Richman Brothers pressing plant in New Jersey
Zoo Entertainment/BMG ordered 1500 of these cassettes. 50 box's , 30 Tapes per box and 2 rows of 15.
These were given away and sold at gigs and on their snail mail merchandise order forms.
.
When the label were getting these made, Richman brothers asked for a Catalog # for the Demo like most albums.
This is where Maynard thought of 72826 of and was given to the pressing plant unknown to them at the time that 72826 comes from the word SATAN spelled on a landline telephone keypad.

(The above statement is confirmed in the 2016 M. J. Keenan biography "A perfect union of contrary things" (Backbeat Books) p. 160. Further more the biography notes a selling price of 6$ for the cassette.)

Some counterfeits are kicking around and there is a distinctive way to tell the real one's from the fake. In the cassette itself There should be Numbers 32/33 moulded on the bottom middle part of the tape and the top middle should say U.S.A. Its hard to see because it is moulded on the inside of the plastic.

I was given one of these boxes back in early 1992 by the Goldenvoice promoter in Las Vegas. I handed out nearly all of the cassettes at various shows that took place at The Huntridge theater, which is where I first saw Tool. They opened for Porno for Pyros.

Despite what others have stated in these comments, the cassettes were indeed shrinkwrapped. I kept two for myself, one that I listened to, and I kept one sealed. I still have both of them, but I keep the sealed one in a separate plastic container, with the cassette surrounded by foam.

Reply if you have any questions.

      Cheers,
      Ray

In the last 2 years how is there like more than 10 of this rare demo still in shrink wrap? Can you say bootleg? I doubt this tape even came in shrink wrap from the band back in the day. Beware 2022!

Be careful with this. There's someone from Indonesia trying to sell a reproduction he made himself for big money. He sent me a video of what it looks like, and while it's close, it's not the geniune thing and I wouldn't want to see more of these flood the market. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVk4UTtFi3Y

          Don't get ripped off.

I see them on eBay all the time. Nowadays, almost never less than $1000. Something I would love to add to my collection, but not for that much.

On the subject matter of the tracks this tape houses, it's all just rough. I listened to flac files of the songs, and it's not that enjoyable. Given the low-tech equipment used, and no label to fund from something better, the quality just isn't there. Don't get me wrong It's beautiful listening to what created a true legacy, but more than that it's better keeping in a safe place.

As a loyal tool fan since I first heard Stinkfist from AEnima, coming so far with a second band, and a third group that focus primarily on Maynards' magic.

From what I've heard, it's anywhere from 200 to possibly 1000. I saw a used copy sell for about 400 on ebay, after which a good amount popped up, with non reaching said amount. I was fortunate to snag a sealed copy for I think 180, which hurt at first to be honest.

Regardless of how many were made or released to the public, since showing up in 91, who knows how many survived the journey of time. So now might be the best time to get a copy. With the market flooded, that is.
