When I first heard about this album I thought I would be a boring Larry Graham album. I never thought I would be playing it more than Newpower Soul which is one of my favorite Prince albums.
Standout Tracks Free, U Moved Me, Love 4 1Another, Utopia, Don't Let Em Change U, Groove On, I Just Found Somebody 2 Love -
Edited one year agoAfter taking some years off, "Larry Graham and Graham Central Station" came back with a "CD" called "By Popular Demand" and sparked more interest back into "Larry".....
Even playing a stint with "Eddie Murphy", nobody saw "Larry" starting to associate with the one and only "Prince" (who was going by "The Artist formally Know As Prince" at the time)....After having several conversations on a "Spiritual" nature (along with the ONE and ONLY "Chaka Khan"), a bond was formed....
That's where "GCS2000" came into play....
Now, in some cases, I have to agree with "Xianwing", this is definitely very "Prince" sounding, very dominate....But, at the same time, it still have points with "Larry" all over it....
That was very evident with the "Title Track", even having faithful "G.C.S" , "Robert 'Butch' Sam" and "Gail Mudrow, along with former "Family Stone" , "Cynthia Robinson" and "Jerry Martini", and "Wilson Rabb"....
"Free" is very "Prince" along with "Chaka Khan, and a very nice Crown Jewel....
"U Move Me", is a nice head banger....
"Love 4 Another" is very very "Funky", but again, has "Prince" STAMPED all over it....
"Don't Let 'em Change U" continues to bring the "Funky" good time, with a great subject matter of self importance....
"I Just Found Somebody 2 Love" is a pretty nice Slow Jam that has "Tina Graham" and his Daughter "Latia" bringing some nice vocals...
Now the 2nd Crown Jewel, and great album closer, "I'magettin'", is a straight "Funk Monster"...It starts like the "G.C.S." classic "Earthquake", that goes into "Funky" layers with an outstanding "LOUD" outro.....
Whether people accept it or not, "GCS2000" is not a bad album by any means....And along with "The N.P.G's" "Newpower Soul", and "Chaka Khan's", "Come 2 My House", they are all Vinyl worthy....Ok, "Prince Estate", get on your job (That's why they need to hire me!!!!!!) -
GCS 2000 is a studio album by funk group Graham Central Station released 1998, on NPG Records/Paisley Park Studios. It was their first new album in America since 1979 ~ Prince had greatly boosted the career of another funk artist, Chaka Khan in 1984 ~ Prince's attempt to salvage Graham Central Station's status, however, was not as successful ~ One of the chief issues was that "Too much Prince and not enough Graham makes GCS 2000 sound like a Prince solo album with Graham guesting, instead of a triumphant return to form from this trailblazing funk bass great. Another complaint was that the album, in contrast to prior Graham Central Station works, sounded much more like Prince's "studio perfection" while including the NPG really One Would need not wonder why ... (CALL IT WHAT IT IS) A Prince album outside of his contractual obligations (AKA) Formerly known as ... Graham Central Station?
