In the early '80s, NOBODY could do what Eddie was doing on guitar...

Then came Steve Vai! DLR assembled the PERFECT all-star game of bandmates for his follow-up to Van Halen. It's hard not to make comparisons, but these three guys were like Van Halen on steroids. This is a perfect album, featuring great individual and ensemble talent, with some solid songwriting. There's not a sameness you find with many hard rock bands; I think they were purposely trying to avoid that.

I was happy to find a near mint, virtually unplayed copy of this masterpiece. Cranking it up reminded me of the first time I heard it, back in '86. Oddly, the album volume increases every couple of songs, ending at a blistering volume. A strange mastering strategy no doubt.

This particular early pressing sounds excellent. Recommended.

One of the best bands assembled. A loss for Van Halen. OG vinyl sounds better than the original CD. It's warmer.
