In Alice in Chains career, maturation is manifested song after song. In Facelift the band is in transformation: from classical hard rock to a deeper and more suffered sound. In Sap, an acoustic EP (with some electric sparks) composed at the end of Facelift tour, the band uses Jerry Cantrell blues compositional style in combination with slowed and introspective melodies, laying the groundwork of the future ballads of the band. Cantrell melancholy (evident in the personal reflection of Brother) is looking for a point of with Staley alienation (evident in the nightmare of Am I Inside). The band will reach the perfect synthesis in the following recordings (Dirt and Jar of Flies) yet Sap, enriched by Chris Cornell and Mark Arm collaboration, is a jewel that demonstrates the development of one of the most important bands of those years.
