Tom Hobson – Quah

QUAH is a low key masterpiece, a beautiful album of acoustic folk blues, anchored by "Genesis", "Song For The North Star", and a few interpretations of traditional blues standards including "Another Man Done Gone" and "I Am The Light Of The World". Tom Hobson sings on a pair of songs on the record's second side, and they fit in very well with the overall vibe of the record, especially "Blue Prelude". No issues with this pressing, Kaukonen's guitars and vocals sound warm and full, organic and pure. My copy has some occasional light surface noise, but plays nice and clean.

I found out about the album only days ago, while reading up on Hot Tuna's "Burgers," a longtime pleasure, and found reviewers across the internet recommending Quah. Lo and behold, at my next record shop visit, it appeared, a first press for only $7.99, and I snatched it up. Serendipitous. I'm glad I did. I will add to those recommendations.

The vinyl sounds absolutely pristine (I wonder if anyone ever actually played the record): quiet and crisp. The guitars sound amazing, and Jorma's voice is warm. And the songs and melodies are beautiful.

It's hard to say why it flopped upon release. Perhaps it surprised people too much, as all the songs are quiet (Jorma's no stranger to quiet - e.g. Embryonic Journey - but never had an album full of introspective music). Perhaps the delay from the original release date put it against unfavorable competition. Perhaps Grunt just had awful distribution and marketing. Perhaps people got enough quiet music from Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, and the like (for the record, there are similarities, but this is still Jorma; it's just... cooler). Whatever the case, it's a shame, but also a great feeling to find such a gem. Don't it by, especially if you find it at a good cost.
