Notes
The Concerts In China:
More + anecdotes about this Album:
- "L'Ouverture" ("The Overture") is in fact the first movement of "Magnetic Fields Part 1" slowed down.
- "Jonques De Pêcheurs Au Crépuscule" ("Fishing Junks at Sunset") is a new arrangement of a very old traditional Chinese song known as the "Fisherman's Chant at Dusk", and is wrongly attributed as being composed by Jean Michel Jarre, misled by the album inlay.
- During this "Tour", Jean-Michel Jarre played for the very first time Laser Harp on the eponymous track " Harpe Laser" ("Laser Harp")
- The album was originally released as a double-disc LP, then as a double-disc CD.
- "Arpegiateur" ("Arpegiator") was used in the soundtrack of the cult film 9½ Weeks as well as in several mid-1980s episodes of the American soap opera Santa Barbara.
More generally:
This album is a balance of previously released tracks by Jarre, new compositions inspired by Chinese culture, and one rearranged traditional Chinese track "Jonques De Pêcheurs Au Crépuscule" ("Fishing Junks at Sunset"), see above about that track. The album consists mainly of live material, plus ambient sound recordings and one new studio track "Souvenir of China". Other new compositions recorded live include "Nuit À Shangai" ("Night in Shanghai"), "Harpe Laser" ("Laser Harp"), "Arpegiateur" ("Arpegiator") and "Orient Express".

Edited 10 months agoWonderful record, the best live album of JMJ, imo.
I think this is one is one of my most played records ever. I still play this once every 2 or 3 months, never get tired of it.
Highlight for me: Ouverture, Arpegiator, Night in Shanghai, Souvenir of China.
The pressing is great, the sound is dynamic, even for a live recording.
The later remasters, especially the latest are ruined: flat and compressed... Why....
So if you really want to enjoy this record, buy an early pressing or early CD. -
-
Totally wasted opportunity, awful mastering, compressed to death. Played once and used it as artwork. Will stick to playing the original pressing. Don’t waste your money until they make a decent master.
-
-
If you really want this album, go to a thrift store and get an original pressing. It cost about nothing and sounds a hundred times better than this nonsense.
-
There are two different masterings of this album on the old CDs (at least on those made in ). These masterings appear only as variants of matrix numbers in the releases Jean-Michel Jarre - The Concerts In China.
CDs with the first mastering have the matrix numbers 811 552-2 01 (CD 1) / 811 553-2 02 (CD 2). If the last 2 numbers are higher, it's the second mastering.
The masterings can also be distinguished by the different playing times of some tracks. The most obvious examples are
- CD 1 Track 3 [Equinoxe IV] - 7:55 (first) / 7:50 (second)
- CD 2 Track 8 [The Last Rumba] - 2:08 (first) / 2:12 (second)
- CD 2 Track 9 [Magnetic Fields II] - 6:30 (first) / 6:26 (second)
(track times as displayed in foobar2000 from my original CDs). The peak levels and DR values are different as well. -
-
I’ve got some good news. I’ve spoken to Sony Music Europe and explained about the stutter issue on side A and C. They looked into it with their vinyl manufacturer and now agreed there is an issue. They are now looking at solving the issue. I assume they will repress it and offer an exchange. When I hear back I will let folks know.
-
Much better for your sound keep your money in the wallet and makes your smooth warm synth sound around you
