This is the first time I am leaving a one star rating for a vinyl record. It is so bad sounding. I don’t even care about the snare sound. The entire mastering is so uber compressed holy shit. The mastering engineer deserves to be punished.

My god…. All I wanted to do was just give this album another chance…

Flat & dead silent vinyl. I just love how warm and dynamic this one sounds. This is the way to listen to St. Anger.

I'm one of those weirdos who likes St. Anger, and this pressing is just great. Sounds like St. Anger, orange vinyls looks absolutely sweet, no clicks or pops. Love it.

I have both the Elektra and the Vertigo releases, and besides collectability, I personally find the EU pressing to be a better option.

              𝟭. 𝗔𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲

The EU release is cut significantly louder than the US release : https://ibb.co/QjNBjYY6

This is true for all tracks and sides : https://ibb.co/WvmFht8c

This is a difference you can see on the grooves, and you'll need to make sure to get a pretty clean copy of the Elektra one if you don't want the listening experience to be ridden with surface noise.

              𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱)

On my equipment and to me, the mastering and the rendered result is sensibly the same. It's almost 1:1 on some tracks such as Frantic, where the rips waveforms are almost superposable once at the same level - and how this can happen with digitized records, I have no clue. Besides amplitude, it's hard to measure (let alone discern, on the turntable) any difference between the two pressings : https://ibb.co/sdQMHFht and https://ibb.co/0jGw7FtR

If any difference at the same level, I prefer the EU - which is more aggressive and punchy. US has slightly more forwards vocals on my equipment, and has a "more organic" rounder sound. These differences are however barely audible to me.

              𝟯. 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴

The EU 2003 pressing has two 180g records and a sturdier gatefold cover with a proper solid spine. The US cover is lighter, has a thinner spine, and I guess 140g or so records.

If you have the US or the EU 2003 pressings in great condition, you're probably set, and imo should not spend too much for the other one.

Excellent pressing, I much prefer this over the original. Clean vinyl, no pops or cracks.

Just a crappy release. There's no defending it. From Reload, to this, to Lulu, to S&M....definitely the darkest period to be a Metallica fan.

This is the best way to hear St. Anger! Highly recommend! Stentorian, powerful sound from origin.

JAMES: Where’s Lars? Goddammit, the contract says we need the CD mastered tomorrow!
(Footsteps come hurrying down the hall, and then the studio door slams shut.)
LARS: Sorry I’m late, guys. I got held up at the airport. I had to deal with the press involving all the lawsuits and stuff. So…what’s going on?
JAMES: Goddammit! We haven’t started on our new CD yet and we have to have it finished today! What are we going to do?
BOB ROCK: No time for mixing. I’ve got one single microphone set up in the middle as that’s all that’s available. If your songs aren’t finished yet, you’ll need to improvise to make them long enough.
KIRK: But I can’t make up solos on the fly!
JAMES: Then don’t. We need the CD finished fast.
LARS: Kirk man, we’re Metallica. People are gonna buy our shit no matter what we put on it, so just play.
KIRK: What about you? You left your good snare at the airport. How are you going to get by?
LARS: I’ll just use a trash barrel.
BOB ROCK: Alright, boys. Everything’s set up and ready to go. I won’t be able to check how it sounds ‘cause I’ll be playing bass. We just have to get it right the first time.
JAMES: There won’t be a second time. Just send the tapes in as soon as we’re done.

Yes, it really is that bad. Master of Puppets was Van Gogh. And Justice for All was Michelangelo. St. Anger is just a finger painting.
