An atmospheric, timeless masterpiece, from track 1 to 5.
This mini-album has aged very well since its release in 1983. It's the first great effort by the band to deliver the sound which defines them as a European band pur sang. Especially on vinyl this album reveals its secrets.
Track 1: Sketches Of Spain. Still played live and it's a pleasure to see Rob hitting the toms still with great pleasure.
Track 2: Bild Am Sonntag (As Usual). One of Michiels finest compositions. Listen to the acapella version on Anthology 3)
Track 3: Acres Of Tintoretto. It fits very well in the record as a whole, but as a standalone composition, It's less impressive.
Track 4: Dapper Street. Aaaaahhh, the melancholy...... This song is SO great. Based on a Dutch poem, it describes a feeling many Dutch listeners will recognize. I'm not sure if this feeling will be recognized internationally.
Track 5: Let alone the somewhat forced guitar intro, this song is a very fine composition by Robert Jan. It should have been the closer of the album, and I believe Henk would have wanted it this way.
Track 6: Your Next Tyres. Would've worked fine as a B-side, or even better: should have been included on the follow-up album Adieu, Sweet Bahnhof. Listen to the first 2 tracks of that album, musically there's quite some similarities. It perhaps should have been omitted from this album, or should have been re-recorded like they did with Acres of Tintoretto.
