Notes
Official Release #8. For sessions & outtakes, see also Frank Zappa - The Hot Rats Sessions (2019).
This is the first Zappa album on which Dweezil has a credit. Both (he and the album) pretty much came into the world together. Also check out "The Story Of Willie The Pimp" on Zappa - Mystery Disc
For UK issues: First UK issues have the Reprise Tri-color labels (Pop Series) RSLP 6356, with the Pye distribution data eradicated by a black over-stamp [Feb 1970]. The 2nd issue has tan Reprise labels RSLP 6356 [Late 1970/71]. The 3rd issue has tan Reprise labels K 44078 [circa 1972]. The 4th has tan Reprise labels K 44078 [circa 1974], but now with a 'W' logo in radius text. (These are the 'key' changes, other variations may apply. The 'K' changes relate to the Kinney acquisition but, under Law, were not applied in the USA)
Many early USA (and international) vinyl releases continued to use 'legacy' artwork, irrespective of a history of Warner company changes and often continuing to bear the Reprise/WSeven Arts logo. Initial issues were on the Bizarre label (distributed by Warner/Reprise) and then phased into the (various) Reprise labels.
On the Zappa One Size Fits All back cover star map, there is a minor star titled "Hotratz" (situated above the major star "Pixies")
The uncredited cover photo was taken by Christine Frka.

Sounds really good. I've heard the original and it's pretty close. I think this is Zappa's best album.

referencing Hot Rats (LP, Album, Repress, Gatefold) 44078
Pretty bad pressing unfortunately. Volume is quite low, there is very little bass, treble is really harsh and tiring all throughout the record. Sounds dull overall. -
The vinyl was 100% worth it. Very heavy pressing. Incredible mix and clear sound. If I had a near mint version it would be the best record I would have. The cover is also nice and strong, also in great shape. I paid $30 bucks for this because I had been wanting a 1969 original. I was able to that it was original and this pressing because of the great photos. Every penny was worth it. I don’t recommend any other master over this.

Edited 2 months agoI had the original , that was stolen by movers . Took a chance on this reissue , as mint pressing from 1969 are $$$ . This is a keeper , all the instruments are well defined and separate . Zappa's guitar jumps out of the speakers , and of course we have Captain Beefheart's great vocals . Very quiet and well mastered reissue , this is a winner .

Just compared this one and my NM Hot Rats UK 1st press.
Both are excellent but I have it that this B. Grundman is fabulous.
On the original sound is well balanced and detailled but the high ends, especially cymbals, begin quickly tiring to my ears.
On the BG version, high ends are better balanced but not muffled. Cymbals are present without compression.
The drums is also better on the BG version, more precise, more dynamic.
The whole work is very enjoyable.
High hands for Bernie !
Always difficult to part with an original... but mine is now for sale.
This 2016 release is my definitive version.

Edited one month agoThis is a really great pressing. The sound is rich and full, highs are not to sharp but still on point and present. All around an amazing reissue

This press cannot be from 1969, there were no LPs of this kind in Portugal at that time (despite the date that appears on label)

The woman pictured on the cover is Christine Frka, alias Miss Christine of The GTOs - the original Sunset groupies all-girl group of groupies that Zappa put out on his label. He let them use his studio and paid them a salary for a while. He cancelled their album - then eventually DID put it out. Anyway... They were all regulars at his house in the hills in '68 - the Log Cabin. For decades - I did not realize who that was on the cover.
-
Only Zappa record I own, so not a fan. This is a great sounding record. Great pressing and music, has occasional pops, cracks in-between tracks but I haven't given it a clean. Will give some of his other records a listen.
