Notes
The debut album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the first album on the Track Record label, Are You Experienced was initially issued in mono and then 'enhanced stereo' on later issues. Recordings had already begun in late October 1966, with the band producing material that does not appear on this album, but was released as singles leading up to its release (A common marketing practice at that time); (Hey Joe/Stone Free [Polydor, Dec 66], Purple Haze/51st Anniversary [Track, Mar 67] & The Wind Cries Mary/Highway Chile [coinciding with album issue].
These tracks appear on later releases.
The Sleeve & Tracks:
The UK Track cover photography was by Bruce Flemming. This design was used in Australia, New Zealand & Japan by Polydor, all mono. Polydor releases in Europe had the words "Jimi Hendrix" placed above the title. This text was Green in , Red in Italy & Yellow in Spain. These later issues were 'enhanced stereo', with tracks listed on the back. The Polydor issue in South Africa, conscious of apartheid at that time, is simply text on a red background. The Barclay Records issue () employed a French TV show image of Hendrix on the cover, with a question mark after the title & psychedelic graphics.
The USA & Canadian issues were released by Reprise Records after the band appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, along with Track Record compatriots The Who. Art directed by Ed Thrasher this August '67 release cover uses a Karl Ferris infra-red fish-eye photo, with purple psychedelic text on yellow. There is a key difference to the tracks on this album, with some removed and replaced by the singles, plus a change to the running order. Released in mono & a remixed & remastered stereo version. The spelling "Foxey Lady" appears in some of these issues. The 'controversially produced' Alan Douglas issue on MCA in 1993 presented the tracks chronologically and two subsequent MCA reissues in 1997 each had differing track order. The editing of the Hendrix Family's MCA 1997 vinyl is more faithful to the original than its CD counterpart.
In South Africa the album was released by Polydor on 12 May 1967 in mono. At the time (during the Apartheid Government of the National Party) the South African censors periodically censored releases where the covers contained images of Black artists or where the songs were anti - apartheid or contained sexual innuendo. No tracks on the album were replaced or left out, but Polydor did not put an image of Jimi Hendrix on the sleeve because the record company feared that this might lead to the banning of the LP and result in a financial loss. The LP was released with a pink and black cover and with no photographs or drawings on either side. See SA Release
The Recording:
Ex The Animals musician & entrepreneur Chas Chandler had brought Hendrix to the UK, teaming him up with drummer Mitch Mitchell (ex Coronets, Blue Flames) and guitarist, turned-bass-guitarist, Noel Redding (ex The Loving Kind). Early recordings were done at De Lane Lea Studios, London [engineer Dave Siddle* & CBS Studios, Bond Street, London [engineer Mike Ross**, with the main thrust of work completed at Olympic Studios, London - where the future working relationship between engineer Eddie Kramer† and Hendrix was forged. Chandler was both band manager and producer of the album.
*Siddle: Manic Depression, Can You See Me, I Don't Live Today, , Hey Joe, 51st Anniversary, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, Love Or Confusion, Purple Haze.
**Ross: Foxy Lady, Red House, 3rd Stone From The Sun.
†Kramer: May This Be Love, Are You Experienced, Highway Chile. Plus additional engineering on the last 3 tracks by Siddle and the last track by Ross.

Really awful product. Muddy all the way through. And as others have noted, something diabolical occurs during Fire - and not in a good way, but in a "sounds like the tape got mangled" way. Something like your mate's badly dubbed fifth generation Maxell cassette copy.
It went back to the shop for a refund. Avoid. -
This sounds great! After cleaning it a little, I noticed little to no surface noise at all. I didn’t hear many cracks or pops and the rest of it was silent. Today also happens to be the day the album was released. This is a beautiful masterpiece by Hendrix and is a rock classic.

It took me some back and forthing and abit of soul searching about how much is too much to spend on a vinyl long player but ive concluded this is the best reissue of Jimi's classic debut, with some caveats.
The back and forthing came from an evening of using my two identical decks/carts into my twin input Opera all tube phono stage to settle on whether the Bernie UHQR or the Marino Legacy is my favourite recent years US mix pressing. The 2010 Marino is my most familiar pressing and benchmark. Its very open and lively and bright but JUST stops short of being too much that way. The bass goes low but the kick drums are muted and the mids abit sucked out. However ive always liked it and its my benchmark. Putting the UHQR on side by side reveals a VERY different presentation. At first i wasnt keen.... we associate high end hi-fidelity with clarity and detail but here was a sound thats alot more mid range focused, relatively very rolled off on top and maybe lacking a little air and maybe not quite as deep of bass either. Its taken me a half dozen playthroughs (which was fun!) to slowly realise its the Bernie UHQR thats more correct. Sure the cymbals dont have the brightness and "detail" of the Legacy but the bass and midrange are tonally more correct. The UHQR has balance across the spectrum. Another reason it was abit tricky is the two inputs in the Opera are fixed at 40db gain for MM and the Marino is cut louder. This also had me often leaning back to the Marino cut due to the brains loudness perception thing. But there was no doubt when the UHQR was at the same level i knew i preferred its mastering for being better balanced and not as brash.
The elephant in the room is the cost. The value for money of the Marino Legacy cut is excellent.... the thick card gatefold with booklet (there is a 2014 repress with a more humble thin card single sleeve with no booklet too) is all i need. The quality of the package is very satisfying alround and the QRP pressing is very quiet. And all this for about £25 which is as much as a too notch LP should ever cost. The UHQR was over 5x the price. The packaging of these UHQR's is bonker excessive. The box is massive, ugly and unnecessary (ala Mofi One Steps/Craft One Steps/Impex One Steps/Music Matters one steps). I only want the original gatefold jacket done well with some brief notes/booklet like the stock 2010 Legacy. Ok, so the jacket is glossy and i can store the main box and gubbins away but what a waste of materials and money. The pressing is spectacularly quiet of compound but its not 5x better than the standard Legacy QRP which is way more than acceptable as is.
The quandary is not being able to make a definitive singular recommendation. Ive basically spoiled myself buying the UHQR. Id have been happy with the Legacy if id not bought the UHQR but Bernie Grundman is my fave engineer and i had to try it. Now ive got a record that sounds abit better overall but offers me no other real advantages and that it cost me 5x what i previously paid to achieve such lowly improvement. Yet i cant go back to the brashness, Bernie's work is more satisfying. In this case im keeping the UHQR for now and selling my Legacy but its not without a bit of a sour grape feeling.
Thats first world problems for ya i guess! -
Holy shit, this pressing is a legitimate firehazard. I’ve never heard it with such punch and ferocity, this is the only way I’m listening to this album now.
-
Loud, clear and raw. I have an EX to NM- copy. I can only speak for my copy but this did not disappoint. I have variant 9 of this pressing. I don’t have a 1967 to compare this to but do not regret this purchase.
-
I'm pretty shocked at the negative reviews here. I think this sounds a lot better than my stereo rerelease copy, both in mastering and mix (way better cover too - but the stereo is a must have for the bonus tracks). I typically dislike listening to mono through headphones but this was a really enjoyable experience. Maybe I just haven't compared it to enough things. Shrug.

Edited one month agoSurprised that there are no reviews on this pressing of an ironic OG album. I obtained a 1B / 1B that does have noise throughout (VG for sure) that can be heard in between songs and quieter parts. However, it is amazing how the songs are so powerful and vibrant and push complete through any noise and are almost completely unheard. The sound is also fairly clear and fresh like an OG should be. I think this 1B / 1B for sound is as good as any OG Stereo I have. I will have to be on the lookout for a clean one. This one is a real treat!!
-
Incredible sounding.. Hoping they release a UHQR of Electric Ladyland and a repress of Axis: Bold as Love would be awesome, though I don't see that happening.

Without getting into DR values or detailed audio analysis, the SACD stereo layer is no more revelatory than a 40-year-old Reprise CD mastered by Lee Herschberg, down to identical haphazard placement of the overdubs.
