Alice In Chains – Jar Of Flies

Not sure what all the complaints are about i own this and the music on vinyl and both sound good and im using nice gear EAR834 phono tube preamp with jjs rega p2 with nagaoka mp 200 i will say the mov cut is better but nothing wrong with this cut especially for the price.I have heard way worse modern pressings id say this is a 7 out of 10 and mov a 8.5 out of 10

With this record you get what you pay for in my opinion... I've not heard other versions on vinyl but own the original European CD.. which to my ear has clearer dynamics. The pressing quality isn't the best unfortunately If you had to own a version I'd steer away from the tri colour one. This pressing suffers from quite abit of surface noise in between tracks and particularly on the start of each side. I'm yet to clean it as with these pressings dynamics often surprisingly improve apon cleaning so i'll update when I eventually do.

In conclusion, should you buy it? Absolutely its cheap, widely available and an awesome album. Defo a must have on vinyl but i'll be seeking an original or a Jar of flies/SAP MOV pressing.

Update: I'm relistening to it as writting the review. The second side shines more than the first for sure i'll be cleaning it his week and will update. Update 2: post cleaning theres still quite alot of surface noise can't fault it for a cheap reissue will be looking to get a MOV or Original at somepoint for sure

Final Thoughts: I compared this to the original CD which I own European origin and it absolutely blows it out of the water from the first few seconds onwards. Unless you have pockets & hearts deep enough to fork out original or MOV Pressings the CD is incredible.

I have an ortofon 2m blue with a cambridge axa-35 receiver with Pioneer cs-g403 speakers, so a modest set up but not bad whatsoever. I bought this through Amazon and hated it as soon as I threw it on the turntable. Sold it almost immediately. Bad mastering, poor pressing quality. My 1994 CD sounded better than this by a mile.

An average pressing. It works, not awful but not great. Usually not a good thing when I get a better sound from a CD or through my iPhone. Quit saying “it’s your sound system” that’s baseless.

This is my first Alice in Chains album, it was my first time listening to them as an adult but my dad played this album a lot when I was a kid yet the emotion never changed behind the music. It's like a nightmare you can't wake up from, that sense of dread and despair like your insides are dying and crying out in anguish but you can only sit through until the end. I don't think another band will ever come again like Alice in Chains with Layne. Maybe thats a good thing.

Hopefully no hurt feelings here, but maybe a lot of listeners need to fix their tracking angle? I have zero issues with distortion or muffling on either side of my copy. I held off buying this. Glad I let go and did.

It sounds fine for me, but side B of my copy has consistent crackle. Maybe cleaning will help.

No complaints with my copy. This is my first time owning this album on vinyl and I'm very satisfied with this pressing. The vinyl itself is flat and visually looks great. The sound is very clear and can be played loud for a great listening experience. Highly recommend this as it's probably one of the better, cheaper represses out there.
