I'm listening to this now I have never heard these songs sound so bad. It has a raunchier sound like a demo or cleaned up live recording. I suggest that you stick to the vinyl releases. This is not an accurate representation of Joy Division. Sounds like an unofficial bootleg. These are not the original recordings

It’s not as bad as everyone says. It’s no Californication. Some tracks did get a bit fucked (She’s Lost Control, Love Will Tear Us Apart) but for the most part it’s pretty good for casual JD fans as myself

Best of Joy Division ....with no "Decades" ? Close(r) but no cigar.

Unfortunately, the mastering on the first CD is pretty brick-walled and dynamically compressed. It's easily on par with the notorious New Order "Singles" compilation from 2005 which collectors may also sports a similarly harsh sound. To sum up, you can find many of these songs on better sounding CDs elsewhere such as the Heart & Soul box-set or the 2007 deluxe reissues.

In fairness, as far as the running order goes it's a decent introduction to the band for someone new and made sense to tie in with the publicity surrounding the "Control" film at the time. The second CD with The John Peel Sessions plus Something Else performances is a basic reissue of "The Complete BBC Recordings" from 2000.

The actual music contained on both discs here is obviously fantastic (5/5) but this compilation is perhaps a bit superfluous considering the various other JD compilations on the market; notably Substance (Factory) and Permanent 1995 (London Records). You can find the book-shaped Heart & Soul reissue for next to nothing (£20) these days which has four times the amount of material here.
