referencing Where Is Brooklyn? (CD, Album, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, UHQCD) UCCQ-9681
This is the Kevin Gray vinyl remastering on Japanese CD. Going from memory here, but this sounds a good deal better than the late seventies vinyl pressing I had, you can actually hear Henry Grimes on this...def skronk session, closer to Ornette than Cherry's "Complete Communion" and "Symphony for Improvisers"... shorter pieces...Blackwell and Grimes are great and Cherry and Sanders seem to be working one huge sound together. Probably grab this on the recent vinyl cuz I never replaced the old vinyl thinking it wasn't that great a session... this is a really improved mastering. Not sure UHQCD is much more than a marketing term but this CD sounds great. Liner insert is in Japanese of course, with quotes from Don Was and Kevin Gray in English. -
Dead silent copy, convincing groove and weight of mastering, this "classic" pressing does a great job at transmitting the beauty and energy of this session.
-
Just a perfect pressing, sound is phenomenal and I wish more challenging albums like this would be reissued at this quality.

Edited one year agoDoes someone know why this record is titled "The Art of Smiling" on labels? Is that an alternative title of the record?

Clear, vibrant sound. Wide soundstage. It seems like you hear Don Cherry coming from one speaker and Pharoah Sanders coming from the other speaker. For me, that stereo effect is overdone. I get that this music is very challenging, but I absolutely love it. My copy has a lot of quiet ticks on Side 1, nothing that ruins the experience, but it would be nicer if it was quieter.

This is an incredible-sounding reissue of one of my favorite Don Cherry albums. Very clear sound, with great soundstage, and imaging

my copy is top shelf. no noise -- dead quiet even between tracks and great fidelity. plus great low retail price point on these vs a lot of the other jazz reissues flooding the scene.
-
Optimal got this one right, and a wonderful mastering job by KG. Glad to add this one to my collection.
