Funkadelic – Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On

Honestly this sounds terrible. It's like the cutting engineer was told to dial back the bass and treble to a point where it's nonexistent. Completely muddy throughout. I have no idea how this compares to a 1st pressing, but the in-print European reissue is far better in every way and is actually dynamic even if it can sound a bit thin at times. But I'd rather hear some bombastic cymbals than none at all. You can find that here:

Strangely, my copy "jumps" at 6'34 in "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts", as if a small part was missing. Maybe a mistake in the mastering process...? Anybody noticed?

Great sound and vinyl is flat and pressed on center. Feava, whatcha doin’?

Sounds terrific, even on my overly neutral and lifeless system. Smashes my 1992 Let's Take It to the Stage but doesn't quite reach my 2004 Cosmic Slop. Still, no complaints from me. These aren't audiophile records but they sound spectacular in their own ways.

Just picked this one up. Sounds excellent. As with anything new and out of package, it had to be cleaned. One side was particularly dusty. After cleaning it, it sounds great. Quiet vinyl. No snaps, crackles, or pops. Sounds really well balanced.

If you are hoping for some great leap in quality from the original CD release you'll be disappointed. While this has more bass any positive affect has been negated by it being blasted with brick wall limiting which is the LAST thing these noisy, messy recordings need. I would guess (yes it is a guess as there is no proper info given on sources for these releases, even the vinyl reissues) that these have been produced from the same digital tapes that were created for the original CD release and simply re-EQ'd and compressed. Most of these early Funkadelic albums seem to suffer from less than stellar sound quality unfortunately. One does wonder where are the original analogue masters and what kind of condition are they in? Someone really needs to go back to step one with this catalogue and start from scratch (preferably someone who understands the term "dynamic range") but that assumes of course that those original tapes are in a worthwhile condition. Such a shame that such great, great music has not has been given the sonic quality it deserves.

I just did a shootout against a 1st press Pitman copy and I'm giving this one the edge. A bit more life and separation to it than those notoriously flat 1st pressings. Not by a mile, but noticeable enough (less mud in the bass) when dealing with this difficult recording.

The cymbal crashes on the title track kill it for me. Harsh and pixelated. One of Funkadelic's best, though.
