"Zauberberg № 5" could be described: "Plastikman meets Steve Roach." -

Absolutely flawless. Perfectly and expressive. Absolutely gorgeous. Simple and elegant. -
Good pressing with almost no surface noise (besides the one thats supposed to be on the record, i.e. Side D) and good bass. Luckily the covers are shown in order from A-F on discogs so you can look it up on here. Record #3 seems to be heavier than #1 & #2 for some reason. Inner sleeves shouldve been a bit thicker and anti static, also a gatefold would be better fitting for multiple records. All in all a reasonable reissue to get if you want to have Zauberberg in your collection.

GAS was always about being minimal / reduced so I actually wonder what people expect from this reissue? Minimal design as was the CD / LP back then, did anyone expect liner notes, photos of Voigt and all that ? That makes sense in other contexts but not here.

Edited 4 years agoArrived sealed, discs were quite dirty as a result of the paper sleeves they come with. No worries, I was able to do a few dry cleans and removed 95% of the debris and they played fine. The sound on all sides are great, a bit of surface noise but there's lots of that mixed into the production itself, not an issue at all. Discs are all centered and flat.
Only thing I'd improve is providing anti-static sleeves, but that's a simple enough fix. -
Edited 4 years agoInteresting that there are so many iterations of track arrangement and length between the versions. It would seem that this vinyl pressing should be considered the most definitive physical version, as its contents and arrangement seem to match the digital version.

The sound on this is very powerful. It really gets you, and I think that's the most important thing about this release. I'm a bit disappointed by the quality of the album cover - it's totally blurred. I have doubts original looked the same.

Edited 6 years agoFor me, the sound seems really decent and I'm delighted to have this on vinyl. But I don't understand why it's being d as 180g. They're definitely not. My discs 1 and 3 are 150g and disc 2 is 160g.

Until today I've only had the experience of hearing GAS in nothing higher than FLAC quality. That was a step up from the 4th hand MP3's someone gave me 12 years ago.
Today I received the 3LP 2019 re-issue of Zauberberg and somehow GAS has taken on yet another life for me...
The sound on these LP's is rich to the the point of a slight organic distortion and there are tones I've never heard in the digital versions. With these additions, the songs take on a new life, and seem to make way more sense than just hearing anything less.
I don't know why people think re-issue = more packaging. I couldn't ask for anything more than what those in 1997 got to hear for the first time!
Now - is Konigsforst coming soon??? -
"The record sides are not shown on the labels" Why not ? I find it really annoying. The same goes for 33 or 45 on Kompakt´s releases.
