Björk – Utopia

This album coincides with my fortieth birthday and my father's disease so it arrived at a very special moment. I always liked Bjork but I it that the post-Vespertine years are not the most accessible. When I saw the vaginal-plastico-gelatinous cover of the album, I had a big doubt and a fear, because I ed the very strange, even ugly, costumes that she wore at a certain time.. And then, listening to Utopia was quite a shock. First there are these birds and from the outset, I knew that Utopia was going to live up to the promise that is inherent in the title itself. Then the flutes, the rhythms, the carefully measured sounds of Arca. The album is not a small piece, it is an adventure in an unknown land... and one that I am discovering little by little. It's a real journey, unique, busy and even sometimes difficult, but where beauty reigns supreme. All it takes is arrival at your destination, the last few titles and especially the conclusion, to release all the necessary tears.

I have mixed feelings about this vinyl. Presentation wise it's beautiful; The peach vinyl is probably the best looking vinyl I own, at least a top 5. Soundwise it's really good, not the miracle everyone was saying it is but a very good one indeed. My only and biggest gripe with it is the tracklisting, part of what makes Utopia, well, Utopia is the tracklist; the transition and how the album flows is, at least for me, Essential when listening to this album. I understand this had to be done to fit the an hour and fifteen minutes record onto two vinyls, but still, it's a bummer. I don't think I'll come back that often to this vinyl due to that, but I cannot not recommend this pressing to any Björk fan; despite of it's flaws, it sounds fantastic and looks amazing.

I keep coming back to this album, there’s some sublime moments. It holds up on its own. It’s out there but also fiercely feminine. There’s something unique about it…

I’d say it’s a 4/5 press. Some surface noise at the beginning of the B-side, as well as in some ages of the C and D sides. But it’s nothing too distracting. This is a wonderful album and one I’m super stoked to have snagged for just 20 bucks at Reckless in Wicker Park.

You need to pick up Utopia on vinyl. The sound is out of this world on a speaker. It’s full of emotion and has a good bass. If you are someone who cares about the color of the vinyl I would try and score a peach pressing because it’s more pleasing to look at

No issue with my copy. Ultrasonically cleaned before first play. No clicks, crackles or pops, great quality and dead quiet. I have both peach and this one. Peach one is still sealed so not sure if I can compare as I don't see any issue with this one.

Some loud clicks and pops even after Zerostat+Brushing it, the track-listing is different from the Digital/CD, output volume is a bit lower than your average, sounds much more bass centric than digital, with vocals often reaching saturation. I conclude that this album is better portrayed as a 24 bit HiRes experience than a vinyl one. Not exactly positive heh ? The different perspective is interesting though.

Beware: it’s a standard black pressing made in the UK. NOT made in Japan. What makes it “Japanese” is an obi with Japanese lyrics in it. That’s the only difference. Do not buy it in high prices, not worth it
