Most famous for his time as music director with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra (the first American-born conductor to lead a major American symphony orchestra) and his works such as "West Side Story" and "On The Town".
Inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.
He married actress Nina Bernstein.
