Drexciya – Deep Sea Dweller

If it is to be believed that Drexciya was always Stinton/Donald and their birth years were 69/80 then they would have only been 23/12 when this was released... absolutely nuts. I can't get over the idea of Gerald Donald releasing his most iconic music with Drexciya between the ages of 12 and 22... that can't be right can it?? Either way, epic start. Love the B side in particular.

A legend. What else can we say? Nothing more to add.

I'm a long time techno fan, but something of a latecomer to the Drexciya party.

I started typing this about 30 seconds before the end of my first listen to Sea Quake. Wow. Just, wow. It's in my top 5 bits of techno/electro already. It's so good it should be made illegal. That's how good it is.

It's a mystery of the universe. It's like a vapour of space.

A classic Masterpiece. This crazy Deep See Dweller make the night of all paranoïd freaks.

Love this record. It has a straight 4 feel. Can be mixed electro or techno style.

The rave/techno scene in the UK was getting pretty formulaic and depressing by this time [1992] and records like this and L.A.M. really helped us through tough times : )

Being the first Drexciya release, this record has to be historical. It's the beginning of the very impressive Drexciya legacy. This record immediately shows the great diversity in athmospheres and producing capabilities these Drexciya guys posses(ed). The A side contains two harsh dancefloor killers. Sea Quake has to be one of my favorite Drexciya tracks, maybe because it was one of the first I heard. The first track on the B side, Depressurization, shows the haunting dark depth that electronics can create. Sea Snake sounds smooth and has a positive vibe to it, the bassline contains a lot of funk. Drexciya always released innovating stuff, this legendary record is nothing less.

This is, together with 'Acid Rain' (SW-1008) a must for any serious collector of Detroit Techno, and the debut single of the Drexciya duo. Released in 1992, the tracks have become seminal classics that stand out in any set. A1 is a furious monster with a tough distorted 909 beat and harsh synth riffs that ALWAYS turns heads in the crowd. If placed right in a DJ set, this can be a climax moment. A2 is another 909-based slammer with lots of weird squelchy sequences in a typical Drexciya fashion. The B-Side holds 2 straight and extremly musical 808-based tracks with great atmospheres. A lot of thinking and keyboard action has gone into this single. Long out of print, even the limited re-press on UR, manufactured after Stinsons sad and sudden death, was sold out within weeks.
